: 2 complete noob questions.
Canuckmakem Jan 28th, 2006, 11:59 PM I have two very silly noob questions.
1. How do I start a program on login. In Windoze I just added it to the Startup folder... it must be simple?
2. I downloaded OpenOffice and can't seem it install it. I dragged it into Applications but it won't execute the load?
Sorry to be a noob.... but I am :D

1. System Prefs/Users/[you]/Login Items/+/select ap.
2. What is the extension of the open office file? (command+i)
harrytse Jan 29th, 2006, 12:08 AM if the item is in the dock, right click on it, or add the application to the Login Items tab in the Accounts portion of System Preferences
Canuckmakem Jan 29th, 2006, 12:11 AM OpenOffice says OpenOffice.org 2.0.app
Thanks for the Login Items... I knew it was something like that but would never have found it.
Canuckmakem Jan 29th, 2006, 12:15 AM Ah... another way... thanks mate.

Assuming the following:
When you downloaded open office, it was a compressed file. Then you unarchived it and ended up with a dmg file. You then opened the dmg and ended up with a few files/ folders, one of which was "Install open office".
Is that all correct so far?
kps Jan 29th, 2006, 12:51 AM Just off the top on my head...don't you need X11 installed to run OpenOffice?
I believe NeoOffice does not, but OpenOffice does...so make sure you have X11 installed.
Canuckmakem Jan 29th, 2006, 12:53 AM Not really. When it finished downloading I clicked on it and got the OpenOffice icon, when I double clicked nothing happened. So I dragged it into my application folder... where it still sits now?
If I "Show Packets Contents" I get a "Contents" folder with other folders in it... but no apps executables that I can see?
Canuckmakem Jan 29th, 2006, 12:56 AM Yeah I just read the Open Office site and it mentions X11. Downloading that as I type.
Canuckmakem Jan 29th, 2006, 01:05 AM Ah... when I try to install X11 it say I already have a newer version installed.
Terry O'Leary Jan 29th, 2006, 07:59 AM I have a 400Mhz. Pismo laptop with Tiger installed and 640MB ram.
I downloaded v2.0 of OpenOffice.
I started up X11 in Applications/Utilities
I started OpenOffice.
OpenOfficeWriter is running as we speak.
Cheers - Terry
Canuckmakem Jan 30th, 2006, 02:26 PM Well done .... but not sure how this helps me on my Intel iMac???
Orion Jan 31st, 2006, 02:04 PM You may be out of luck for the moment. The OpenOffice project seems to have a new port being prepared for the Macintels (or whatever anyone wants to call them). As such the problem is that you likely have a PowerPC compiled version. I am of course assuming that you don't have a preview version.
You may be able to Get Info on the OpenOffice application and force it to run in Rosetta emulation. I don't have anything to test this on and it may not work, so no promises ^_^.
Neo Office may provide another alternative that looks more Mac-like and all the same functionality. That said it doesn't seem to have bee ported yet either.
LittleCanadianMapleLeaf Feb 1st, 2006, 03:29 PM Actually, I have a non Intel Mac and I could never get OpenOffice to work. I have X11 installed, and I downloaded OpenOffice from three different sources, extracted it, and nada. OpenOffice will open, but I have no options. Everything is grey-ed out, except the 'About OpenOffice' and 'Quit'.
Very frustrating.

CubaMark Feb 1st, 2006, 03:54 PM Remember that, for reasons known only to Apple, downloading and installing X11 from their website will give you the "already installed" error. Obviously it's not, since there's no X11 app. Weird.
You would need to install X11 from the Install/Restore CD/DVD that came with your computer. It's available under a "custom" install.

LittleCanadianMapleLeaf Feb 1st, 2006, 04:48 PM Yep, I installed X11 from my Tiger disc.
I have come to the conclusion that OpenOffice just doesn't like me. ;)
