: Midi out problem
nxnw Dec 30th, 2005, 08:37 AM I got a MIDI-USB interface for my son a few days ago and I am not sure everything is working right.
MIDI in is working with Garageband, and Midi out is working with a couple of free midi playing applications I found on versiontracker.
However, I can't get either Garageband or Quicktime to do Midi out. I think, either I can't figure out how to configure this feature in those apps, or something is wrong and the interface just isn't showing up.
Help?
Macified Dec 30th, 2005, 10:11 AM Having never dealt with midi-out, I'm curious as to what you want QT and GB to do for you. Do you want them to play a track using the keyboard voices and speakers?
Sorry to not offer assistance but this might help me out in the future and I'll do what I can to try to find answers for you.

Yup.
Macified Dec 30th, 2005, 11:33 AM My guess is that you can't do this with QT or GB. QT will provide voices to a midi device and GB will allow recording but I think the outgoing control would be stripped out of GB. You'd probably have to move up to Logic Express (with Apple) or go with a third party app that allows you to control the keyboard from the computer. You might want to look into Cubase SE. It's about $150 and it looks like it goes well beyond GB. Probably has much better support for device control and will give better access to keyboard features than you can get out of GB.
There are probably shareware apps that will allow external playback. Most midi shareware apps I've seen have limited interface and are not necessarily easy to use if you aren't really up on midi controllers.
Bosco Dec 30th, 2005, 12:17 PM AKAIK..Garageband and Quicktime won't access midi out. They're designed to play only internal sounds.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I've never seen a midi out option in QT and I never saw that option when I checked out GB either.

What is the midi/USB setup? What is it?
For example I have a Roland/Edirol PCR-A30 keyboard with midi in and midi out,
But I tend to just use the midi out on my keyboard with a midi cable through an
M-Audio MidiSport 2x2 to an SD-20 sound module.
I can also use my keyboard with the computer, But I use the USB to do that.
(Which is configured in my Audio Midi Setup Application in the utilities folder)
nxnw Dec 31st, 2005, 08:59 AM 1x1 USB to midi, with both in and out plugged into the correct ports on a Roland piano.
In works. Out also works with certain applications, but I can't get out to work with Quicktime or Garageband.
Lawrence Dec 31st, 2005, 09:17 AM 1x1 USB to midi, with both in and out plugged into the correct ports on a Roland piano.
Why would you want both in and out plugged in into your Roland piano?
Are you able to send midi message edits to knobs and sliders on your Roland piano?
Does your Roland piano have controller capabilities?
Which Roland piano is it?
Gotta ask
My setup:
I just have one midi cable connected to my midi controller keyboard to a USB 2x2 with a thru midi switch,
(I have a second midi cable from the USB 2x2 to a Roland/Edirol SD-20 Sound module)
Should I want to change my keyboard layout then I'll attach another midi cable and transmit new settings.
In works. Out also works with certain applications, but I can't get out to work with Quicktime or Garageband.
What is it exactly that you are trying to do?, I'm not sure if we are on the same page.
nxnw Dec 31st, 2005, 03:27 PM In (to computer) for recording; Out for playback.
Roland EP-85

Roland EP-85
I'm still not clear exactly on what you are trying to do with midi,
Are you trying to playback using the midi to the keyboard?
Do you have the owners manual?
If not, Then download it from Roland.
Roland US support for owners manuals (You'll need to give info to download):
http://www.rolandus.com/support/product_manual.asp?Letter=E
Look for Roland EP-85 in the listing and click the link for the manual download.
On the following linked page just type in your email twice and for the zip code put in your postal code,
It worked for me, A link was sent to my email box.
I'm trying to help, Sorry if I appear not to be helping.
Bosco Dec 31st, 2005, 06:48 PM I've looked a bit and I'm now convinced that Garageband will not play an external midi module (your piano). QT has never done that.
You need to import your GB trax into another sequencer. Another reason to buy Logic Express. Of course after you play with Express for a while you'll find yourself needing Logic Pro.
No wonder their stock keeps going up. :)
thedave Apr 15th, 2007, 01:12 PM hi
i'm afraid i can't offer any help, but i was wondering if maybe you (or anyone else) might be able to help me....
i've been trying to find a midi to usb converter, but wasn't sure if such a thing existed.. all i've been able to find are midi controllers/keyboards.
i have a keyboard with midi out & in, but no midi port on my mbp. i also have great software that transcribes midi input to sheet music (staff) as you play, and then lets you edit etc. (sibelius)..
you mentioned you have a midi-usb cable ... how much do they cost (ballpark)? what brands should i be looking at? where would i find such a thing (i've tried various online stores & real-world computer stores, to no avail)?
thanks in advance for any help :)

webweave Sep 5th, 2007, 05:31 PM Here is why you want to use midi out from your mac. You have an old synth that you like the sound it produces better than the synth and audio output device built into your mac.
For instance, I have a vintage sound module that produces it's own unique sound. You also have to plug the audio output of the synth into a recording device or USB mixer to record it but you should be able to trigger it from any midi aware mac app.
I don't do GB or Logic but in a simple midi player like Sweet MIDI X you go to the Midi setup menu and select the midi device you want to output midi through.
In the QT Preferences panel you have a drop down for Default Synthesizer: Your midi device might have software to enable this.
By the way I rarely do this anymore, you'd have to have a Prophet V with midi or some special reason as the built in synth packages have improved so much and I have a USB audio interface that beats the hell out of those mini headphone jacks.
