: Constant Whine of Fan: iMac G5
Ohenri Dec 9th, 2005, 11:00 PM wowsers...
I finally set this unit up, and after a pretty long install, all I get is this constant whine of the fan. MAN... it sounds so much like engine noise - for anyone who's had to sit thru a badly wired car stereo.
Is this normal?? It will speed up - then slow down, then speed up all over again.
Help!

monokitty Dec 9th, 2005, 11:04 PM Fans - unless damaged - and as I've told others before you as well, don't 'whine.' Unless the iMac G5 is running the Apple Hardware Test or performing processor-extensive task, the fans are barely audible. What you're hearing is more than likely the hard drive, especially if you're referring to the iSight-based iMac G5.
jasonwood Dec 10th, 2005, 12:37 AM sure it's not the CD? I would imagine that should be the largest component... and it does spin up and down depending on what you're doing.
corinthian Dec 10th, 2005, 10:12 AM Yes its normal. I have a revB 1.8, and the fans ramp up and down all the time depending on whats happening.
Might i suggest some music to drown it out? :)
I just wish the fans would stay at a constant speed, then your ears could get used to it and learn to ignore it.
wowsers...

Pelao Dec 10th, 2005, 11:56 AM Lars,
I think you are missing something here. There is a wee bit more to the tale.
H,
Have a look at this thread over at Apple:

This essentially what is happening. When I set the thing up yesterday, here was a point where it went thru a massive and loud fan spinning (almost like a plane) for like 5 secs (was actually kinda scray), and then suddenly stopped.
The fact is that there is a constant spinning, and it's not the HD. I just don't want to have to take it in so soon.... :(
I'm hearing it as I'm typing this.. in fact, it's speeding up. AND, I'm doing nothing CPU intensive.
Coming from a PB, and being so anxious to set this up, I'm a little... chapfallen.

Pelao Dec 11th, 2005, 11:12 PM My Business partner and I purchased the same machines. His has no sound whatever. Mine has a mild buzz from the fan in the centre rear, tucked under the stand. Its generally very mild and barely noticeable: if this was a tower I would not be able to hear it, it's just that it is parked right in front of me.
Frustrating that my buddy's is silent.
:(
Anyway, what I do not have is the revving up and down. Thats not cool (sorry) and from what I have read, should not happen.
Ohenri Dec 12th, 2005, 01:30 PM yea....
I figured as much. I'll play with it for the next little while and see what kind of whine I get over time. I have to go to the y/d store for my lap as well today, so I might just ask to see what is up.... I just don't feel like boxing it up all over again.... I just took it out.

Pelao Dec 12th, 2005, 01:44 PM If you have time, post back about what the YD guys say. Probably not much, but it seems to be a common thing so you never know!
Ohenri Dec 14th, 2005, 05:00 AM jesus...
I have to take this is in: the slightest processor work is making the fan speed up and down. As someone described in another forum, it's like having a remote control airplane. With every click, it revs up, then down again - and that was just from surfing the NET! wowsers..
Major disappointment.

Pelao Dec 14th, 2005, 08:34 AM Sorry to hear that. Mine has a minor buzz that occasionally gets a bit annoying, but I can live with it for now. If it gets worse I also will take it in.
