: iPod Mini won't turn on?
zurich Oct 25th, 2005, 02:22 PM Hi there,
As the title says, I have a second gen iPod Mini that went kaput on me this morning. I was happily listening to it yesterday and then put it in the dock (FW) when I got home as I do every day, except this morning it was lifeless. Nothing on the LCD, the Menu + Play reboot didn't do anything either, OS X didn't see it at all when I hooked it back up - nothing.
Um, suggestions? How irritating is it to get Apple to fix?
monokitty Oct 25th, 2005, 02:34 PM If the iPod is under warranty (less than a year old), but more than 6 months old, Apple will replace the iPod mini for $50 shipping/processing fee.
8127972 Oct 25th, 2005, 02:54 PM Lars, I have had customers get that $50 shipping/processing fee waived if they say the right things to customer relations. Plus you don't have to pay it if you have Applecare.
monokitty Oct 25th, 2005, 03:51 PM Another reason to have AppleCare. :)

Is there some sort of button combination like the Menu + Play reboot thing that I'm not knowing about??
apple=god Oct 25th, 2005, 05:37 PM ok try using disk utility to see if it pick it up. if theres nothing there then you could possibly ping the ipod through your firewire port, i have no idea how to do that, though. I think you would have to do it in firmware O (cmd + option + F + O) but you'd have to find the specific names for evertything. You could try opening up ipod updater and see if IT sees it. Sometimes my ipod just refuses to mount and ipod updater sees it even though the computer doesn't. It sounds stupid but maybe the hold is on? haha! probably not. I could do a little research on the Firmware thing. Are you on a mac or a windows? Also, If you wanted to get it fixed (if under a year old) go to apple and literally say eaxactly what you said at the beginning of this thread. If they say you have to pay the fee, try to bargain for a brand new one, although you would probably have to send it in anyway seeing as they don't sell ipod mini's anymore :(

P.S. PM me if you need any more help! ;)

Actually the buttons to push are Menu and the middle Select button...fwiw I just today received my replacement mini as mine was having the same problems.
It seemed to start when the 1.4 firmware was put on it...lots of random lock ups. I sent it in for repair and all Apple did was roll back the firmware...when I updated it again (to get newer features) it started happening again.
I then talked to Customer Service and agreed to try a brand new unit instead of a software fix. That is what I have in my hand at the moment so we'll see if it works any better.
scootsandludes Oct 25th, 2005, 07:02 PM If you take it to the Apple store at Yorkdale, they'll probably just replace it on the spot for you. Just book an appointment at the genius bar, they'll look at it, say something is wrong with it and get you a new one from the back.
The GF's mini died this summer, and I brought it in, and they replaced it for me on the spot.
