: iMac G5 question
khorlick Oct 23rd, 2005, 03:22 PM I am wondering if the ram that comes with the new iMacs is built onto the board, or is the normal type ram that you can pull out.
Thx,
Keith
P.S. I have my first personal Mac(20" iMac G5) on order! I've worked on them for years at my local Newspaper (www.hfxnews.ca) but this is my first one at home. VERY EXCITED! :D
billwong Oct 23rd, 2005, 03:47 PM There is 512 Mb on the motherboard. There is one DDR2 SDRAM slot for memory upgrades.

CanadaRAM Oct 23rd, 2005, 04:06 PM The single socket for DDR-2 533 MHz RAM is different from the PC3200 RAM that was used in prior iMac G5's and PowerMacs.
You can install up to a 2 Gb module in the socket, the 512 MB soldered-on memory cannot be changed, to max. RAM is 2.5 Gb.
Thanks

DoNotPokeTheScreen Oct 23rd, 2005, 04:10 PM Is it possible for a person to solder out that 512MB of RAM and put in another piece of RAM in there?

Without having tried it, I would say no.
Besides the issue of soldering on the logic board
you would have to assume that the memory controller chip is capable and configured to read higher density chips on the motherboard. I think it would be a stunningly bad idea to try it.

WARNING:I'm new to macs so i''ll probably sound like a tit.
Anyone in Toronto know anywhere I can go to to check out G5's? Also, what's better, 17" or 20" G5?

Carbon has a really great store to check things out. Don't know if they have the new imacs setup yet. Also the apple store up in Yorkdale mall is great to check stuff out.
phuviano Oct 23rd, 2005, 07:39 PM Yorkdale doesn't have the imac G5 on display yet, well they didn't have them on thursday when I went. Although, they did have 1 17" Imac G5 in stock.
DoNotPokeTheScreen Oct 24th, 2005, 08:42 AM I checked Bestbuy and they have the old iMac G5 17inch 1.8GHz for 1199 if you're interested...
They also have the 1.8GHz PowerMac G5 for 1999.
Best place to shop for Macs is my campus store for me : D
Best place to shop for RAMs for me is this tiny little computer shop in this tiny little mall called the Metro in Markham (Birchmount and steeles). They have great prices. If you don't want to go through t he trouble of finding it and bargaining your way through it, CanadaRAM and CanadaComputers are okay. You could look around in Pacific mall to try to find better prices.

I went to Yorkdale on saturday night. They had a couple of the new 17" iMacs on display, but no 20" ones.

Seriously? $1695 for the 20"? The highest I've ever seen it is $1999.
