hi guys,

thinking about upgrading the ram to 1G as 256mb is really really slow... and my PB seems to be a lot faster...

is there any paid service to perform the upgrade and how much would that cost?

or

anyone in kw area is experienced with openning up the mini and is willing to lend a hand? :)

last question, anyone bought a piece of ram from canadacomputers that works well with the mini?

thanks a lot!

Doesn't Carbon have a store in KW? I'm sure they could do it.

It's totally do-able yourself (though just a little scary). If you buy the RAM from CarbonKW, maybe they'll throw in the install as well. (Can't hurt to ask.)

Otherwise, I always recommend CanadaRam (they guarantee Mac-compatible RAM).

Good luck with the upgrade. You'll notice a huge performance jump.

thanks guys! will make a couple of calls and see what the charges are...

do you think pc2100 ram will work? asking because i have one of that ram in my old dell which i'd like to use for my mini if possible.

thinking about putting the 512mb ram on my Pb into mini and put that 256mb ram back into PB... so both have 512mb, that will save from buying a new ram.

anyone has 512mb on the mini 1.25ghz model and/or 1ghz PB... how's the speed for running tiger? thanks!

I bought a Samsung PC3200 stick, 1GB for $124 back in March. I think it was from CanadaRAM out of Vancouver. Despite Canada Post delivering it to the wrong house five blocks away(Numbers weren't even close!), the installation was easy.

Simply pop the clips with a putty knife. I'm sure there is a video on how to do it on the net somewhere. Replace the RAM, pop the cover back on, and away you go.

carbon has 1G for $249, hmm... that's quite an investment considering the mini itself is just $700... jicon, how did you get yours for $124? that sounds like a really good price

Sometimes you pay for what you get. I bet Carbon will do the install, and if you have any warranty issues, they should be able to help you out. I would be hesitant to purchase anything online without a physical store nearby to deal with issues.

No you can't do that, the mini uses DIMM, which is full-size ram whereas the PB uses a SO-DIMM which is a low voltage mini ram stick for laptops.

I thought minis always used SO-DIMMs... or am i wrong?!

AFAIK the mini uses a standard DIMM positioned to the left of the system inside just squeezed in with the length of the case

most places overcharge for ram. your best bet is to buy ram from someplace cheaper, like canada computers or some place like that. they still offer the same life time warranty with most ram.

install it yourself, it's easy.. then you get the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself, and saved over $100 in the process.. :)

Well, I have two pieces of 1GB PC3200 DIMMs that might work on your mac mini. They are Kingston, unopened and selling at 140 each. It's heck a lot cheaper than what you can find out there.

And void the warranty :)Not at all! You will not void the warranty on the mini by installing the RAM yourself.

Yeah, i've seen your ad... but you're in Markham and i'm in waterloo... and i'm not planning to go to Markham in the next one or two weeks...

Hmmm. 1 year warranty - the industry standard is lifetime. The 129.99 price is only for cash purchase in person. Personally I would not go for these.

CC do not guarantee compatibility with Macs. and the Mini is pretty finicky; I'd give you an off the cuff 50% chance of it working. If the SPD values aren't properly set on the module, the Mac won't run it - and there's no way to tell unless the vendor tests and guarantees compatibility.

But it is cheaper than RAM that is guaranteed Mac-compatible.

What model number of Kingston are they? THe KVR- ValueRAM series have been widely reported to be incompatible with the Mini but the KTA-series should be OK at PC2700 or PC3200.

Thanks,

carbon does install free if you buy the ram from them.
and as for canada computers, if you plan on buying from them, be very careful, and keep your receipt... they charge $15 just to take the three minutes to search their system for your receipt to *maybe* allow you to return.

Pity they don't make a 2GB DDR module like you can get for DDR2. :(

Just an update, i'm now running my little mini with 1G ram and this thing flies!!!

went to canadacomputers and bought a branded ram Corsair - value select, and it works just fine. the modules on the dimm is from samsung. cost $185 after tax. bought the putty knife from canadian tire, the smallest one was 1.25 inch, so it's smaller than the one apple was suggesting (1.5 inch).

it was a bit scary when openning the case, at the beginning, but once you popped up one end, it's not that bad. i found it easier to pop up the right hand side (when ports are facing you), and then the front, and lastly the left side. but whatever works for you.

you do get a satisfaction of being able to open this thing yourself! and it really makes a huge difference!

And the REASON it maxes out at 1GB is because there aren't any DDR 2048MB modules to fit in its solitary RAM slot. ;)

They actually tried to install 2GB of RAM over at Macworld (http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/editors/2005/03/maxmini/index.php), but apparently, the mini does not accept 2 GB modules.

Or maybe it's simply that it doesn't accept any old RAM. One of the commenters here seems to think that there's hope though. I have no idea if it's BS or not. YMMV.

Has anyone upgraded a Mini from 512 mb to 1 gig RAM? The newer Minis (like mine) come with 512. The decision to upgrade this is harder without knowing that there will be a noticable difference in performance.

Well, another good reason would be because the memory controller is incapable of addressing 32 device modules or 1 gbit density chips on 16 device modules.

The Apple developer spec on the Mini is not completely definitive on the subject, so the door is open a crack to a 16-chip 2 Gb module -- if ever there is made a 2 Gb non-ECC, non-registered, non-stacked PC2700 DIMM. Don't hold your breath.
