: Recording Phone Messages on my Mac

Does anyone know of a way that I can take a saved phone message and save it to my Mac?
I figure I can dial out with the Mac via the 56K Modem and listen to the messages (using the Mac as a glorified telephone) but I don't know how to record the message I am hearing.

Can you give me any help in a software or hardware solution or refer me to some one else?

Much thanks.

If you have a phone that has a headset jack, you can get a very cheap cable to go out from the headset jack to the line-in on your computer. As long as you don't have an ibook, I believe you should have a line-in. Then you just need to set your audio input in system preferences ot line-in and use a simple audio recording program. Toast comes with an easy one to use, and there are many you can download and try for free from downloads.com.

Audio Hijack allows you to record any sound that is played on your Mac, regardless of where it is coming from. If you dial out with your Mac and you can hear the messages, Audio Hijack will record it.

Back in the OS9 days there was PhoneSpy.
It does exactly the job you want it to do, plug the modem click the button and record.
Only problem: you need to be able to boot OS9 (not classic).

Yeah Audio Hijack or WireTap should work well.

Here's a new little program called Silica that can show caller ID and look up the number in your Address Book.

I'm curious but how does one dial out to a telephone with their Mac? The modem is set up to send to other modems or to send fax signals, how do you set it up to connect to a phone without it sending data?
