Hi there,
I am still a bit use to PC when it is time to start a clean-up, but now I think my iMac need some. But then, how can you defrag (or wathever the term is...) on a Mac?
Thank you for your help!

Honestly, you don't need to worry too much about defragging the Mac, OS X and the HFS+ file system keeps things in pretty decent order. You can get a program like DiskWarrior which will do disk maintenance, but its really a rescue utility rather than general maintenance.
Programs like OnyX are a little more geared toward cleaning things up/tweaking the system. Others here who use it can vouch for its usefulness.

Thanks!
THat is reassuring to know I don't need to look at this so much compared to my PC. I will take a look a these programs just in case :)

Just make sure you have adequate free space on your drives and repair permissions(using "disk utility") before and after software installs/updates.
For a while I was using Onyx and its equivalents but it seems OS X can take care of itself pretty nicely.

Trev pretty much sums it up. The only time I would recommend a defrag program is when you have big files over 20GB (such as video editing).
There is a program called iDefrag that does a good job.

Hi Friends
When I install a program or update, and then the computer tells me it's "optimizing", does that mean it's defragging? And if so, does it defrag the entire drive?
Thanks for your knowledge!
