: Considering fully switching over...

Hello all, long time listener, first time caller.

I have been doing the PC thing all of my life. I have always had an itch to go over to Apple, I think it is because the first computer I ever touched was an Apple II. Recently I bought an iBook blueberry G3 and was quite impressed with it and OSX. That laptop is not my primary, I just wanted an Apple to play with. So here is my problem...

I have tasted the goodness of OSX and I want more. I want it to be my primary computer. But the thing is I bought a PC laptop only a few months ago. There is no way I can just go all out and buy another new laptop. So I want to look into a trade.

I have a P4M 2.4, 40gb HDD, upgraded to 768mb RAM, 128mb Radeon, 15" WXGA (widescreen), DVD-ROM/CDR/CDRW, Wireless G, internal memory card reader. I have treated this computer with much love and care, I deem it to be in immaculate condition.

What I want to know is what would be a worthy Apple trade? I am a graphic design student so I have to have some power. I am a gamer as well, but the only game I play right now is World of Warcraft which is Mac friendly.

So basically I am looking for something that has more than or equal to 32mb of vram, greater than 1ghz PPC, preferrably 512mb RAM, and widescreen would be beautiful (once you go widescreen its hard to go back).

If anyone can throw out makes and models that would equal this roughly, so I can get a bearing, it would be greatly appreciated. Keep in mind this bundle is around $2000.

Thanks, any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Rob.

Hi Rob,

My friend has a G4 Powerbook 17" so it is the widest in the powerbook range. It has a 1.5 Ghz processor and comes with 512 of RAM which you can expand etc. It also comes with 64 Mb or Video Ram. He seems quite happy with it and is running Panther (OS 10.3) so you should be able to meet the specs for World of Warcraft.

I have an older (1999) G3 Powerbook which works well, but has a small harddrive, otherwise I am very happy with it.

Best of luck and welcome to Mac.

It would probably be easier to sell your PC laptop and use the money to buy a Mac. I hardly see Mac users that want to switch back to PC.

I agree with this totally. You're better off to try and sell your current laptop to another PC user and then put the proceeds towards a Mac.

We'll be doing something similar with our eMac 800MHz...we'll be selling that off and then putting the proceeds towards a G4 iBook. Anyone looking for an eMac, keep your eyes open in the trading post...it's Coming Soon! ;)

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah I doubt anybody would give up their mac. So now I am looking to get rid of my PC, but haven't found anything suitable. I do not want to go the auction method. So where should I go? Does anyone have any good referrals for sites that I can try to sell this off at? Most of the ones I find are out of business or haven't been updated in a while.

Thanks again,
Rob

The biggest problem with your situation is the depreciation value of PCs. PCs drop in price insanely fast, so the second you buy, you get screwed. For example, you list your laptop being worth around $2000. It's actually a little closer to $1200. Check this out:

Futureshop (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10050670&newdeptid=&catid=11520&logon=&langid=EN&dept=0)

3+Ghz, 15" Widescreen, combo drive PC for $1399 brand new. That's the way the PC world goes. Macs are getting pretty close to the same depreciation speed these days too.

All this to say, I am one of the few people considering to trade a Mac for a PC (spending a year in Florence, need a laptop and PC is just cheaper), but it's just not worth it. I'll likely have to keep my iMac and fork out the cash for a laptop. You may be stuck with your PC. Unless you're willing to take such a major hit on the money.

Good luck! Once you go Mac, you never go back. ;)
