U2 is like fine wine.. they get better with age. smile.gif

Already putting my pennies away to get tickets to tour in 2005.

Just downloaded it... it's alright... ;)

Personally, I like U2's "Elevation." Call me typical. ;)

Achtung Baby was the last album of theirs I could get into. Ever since then it all sounds like overproduced **** to me. I keep trying to give them another chance, but they keep flinging that dog-doo at me.

Play some Joshua Tree or Boy, and then listen to newer stuff. No comparison.

IMHO, of course.

Exactly, CK.

Up to Actung, they are one of the best bands to have ever recorded a note. After that, they are has-beens.

I cherish those early albums.

Actually, i don't mind the album that "Beautiful Day" is on, but it gets lost in a sea of pop/rock crap that is on the shelves now.

Geez what a bunch of critics. That's my job!

U2 hasn't had a solid album that wowed me lately either but they are a solid band who now puts out one or two great songs on otherwise mediocre albums.

No offense... but your humble opinions in this case sucks @$$... and it sucks hard. graemlins/ptptptptptpt.gif ;) I'm talking bowling ball through a 100 foot hose hard.

Has beens.  Their the best f**** rock band on the planet.

OK.

How's this?

I don't care for U-2 at all.

Especially the guy with the blue glasses.

Am I not entitled to that opinion?

I tried to be more positive ehMax. The "has beens" comment was harsh and uncalled for.

But please don't tell me U2 is the best rock band in the world. Who decided this stature? I don't buy any band holds this title. I love rock and roll - love it! - but U2 is not on the top of my list for rocking songs or consistency.

P.S. - I liked the ball and hose metaphor. :D

I downloaded the radio version of Vertigo and thought that it
would sound a lot better if it was rerecorded in a studio.

I don't mind some of U2's music, It's nice to listen to when
I'm out walking my dog or when I'm on the subway, But I can
only take so much of it.

I much prefer Blue Rodeo or Doc Watson (http://www.merlefest.org/DocsIntro.htm)

I also agree with CapitolK. Besides, U2's music has become to commercial. I much prefer the layered sounds of The Cure. (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001906O0/qid=1095993778/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_3_3/701-4041590-2288301)

Everyone's entitled to an opinion no matter how @$$ sucky they are. :D

But please don't tell me U2 is the best rock band in the world. Who decided this stature? I did.. I have declared it and it shall be law in ehMac land.

Besides, U2's music has become to commercial. Where's the barf greamlin. tongue.gif U2 is one of thee only bands that has soul. Casually listening to a few songs on the radio does not give you any clue as to what they're about. Bono's got more soul in the upper left fragment of his pinky toe that all of the top 10 hit artist combined right now. Believe me, if I had to explain why to you, you wouldn't understand.

I like The Cure too, their layered music and his layered makeup. :D

i think U2 have been stuck in a moment and they can't get out of it. If this is the moment I'm stuck in, I never want to leave. They will be stuck in one situation later this year as they'll be forever recognized in the Rock-n-roll hall of fame. Me thinks there new song will be stuck up in the charts for awhile too. smile.gif

Now, everyone with negative vibes towards U2... go suck a mirror balled Lemon.

All That You Can't Leave Behind was a good U2 album, they got back to their roots sort of and really rocked it while being contemporary. 'Peace on Earth' and 'Grace' were the only two tracks that disrupted the flow and I hated that. Why would they end the album with a song like Grace? Boring! HOWEVER, the rest of the album is awesome.

This new single, however... it's another story. I've only heard it once, so maybe I need to hear it a few more times. Hey, I like U2, but as of right now, I think this new track is mediocre

Gotta love lemonade smile.gif

I'll have to check it out, but for me their best work was their first 4 or 5 albums.

I was recently re-ripping "October" and had to sit down and listen to the entire album... "War" is right up there as well, IMO...

That's good schit.

What sets the band apart for me is that even their dirtiest sounding rock and roll still manages to possess an ethereal, spiritual quality which is completely lacking in most modern music. I remember hearing the 'The Fly' for the first time when that haunting voice came on over the grunge guitar work. My wife was lucky enough to see them in concert and she said that people were weeping during their performance of 'One'.

I also admire Bono's political work... he understands the role of the jester and he plays it very well.

I was going to take issue with you calling them the greatest current rock band... but after some reflection I can't think of anyone else I'd put above them.

Cheers!

It take awhile for Vertigo to set in (http://cml00.engr.ucdavis.edu/~malvick/vertigo.mp3). (No jokes about Vertigo being the result of problems with the inner ear) As Bono say, he can't sing but he's got soul.

Crank this baby to 11. (Will sound even better to me when I'm in the front row burning my calves from bopping for 2 hours strait. You do NOT want to be below me when I stage dive though) I think the link may not be the radio version but the unmixed bootleg, but it sounds awesome.

Heard it on the radio on the way home on 99.9 and DJ was freakin out afterwards. Said calls were flooding in for more playtime for it. They repeated it 3 mintutes later.

The buzz on the U2 forums is huge. Its getting huge airtime. Stations in New York are going to play it on the hour all weekend.

This will shut the U2 "fans" up who "Like them until after Joshua Tree."

They're giving people something.. they can FEEL... they can FE-EEEL. :D

Why would they end the album with a song like Grace? Boring! Grace is one of my favourite songs of all time btw and my youngest daughter is named after the song. :D Beautiful lyrics.

Grace, she takes the blame
She covers the shame
Removes the stain
It could be her name

Grace, it's the name for a girl
It's also a thought that changed the world
And when she walks on the street
You can hear the strings
Grace finds goodness in everything

Grace, she's got the walk
Not on a ramp or on chalk
She's got the time to talk
She travels outside of karma
She travels outside of karma
When she goes to work
You can hear her strings
Grace finds beauty in everything

Grace, she carries a world on her hips
No champagne flute for her lips
No twirls or skips between her fingertips
She carries a pearl in perfect condition
What once was hurt
What once was friction
What left a mark
No longer stings
Because Grace makes beauty
Out of ugly things

Grace makes beauty out of ugly things

Heard "Vertigo" today while flyin down the highway in the big diesel truck.

My opinion?

Pure unadulterated classic U2! I loved it! I want MORE!!! :D

The long wait was worth it.

BTW...I have many many favorite U2 songs, but the one that always seems to get me is "Desire". ;)

"Vertigo" may just be my second favorite.

I caught the new single last night and I really liked it.

On the other hand, I recall watching U2 perform on the Superbowl, MTV awards or something like that (I can't remember which) and they sounded absolutely horrible. Bono's voice was all scratchy. He couldn't carry a tune in a bucket! I mean I've heard cats in heat sound better. That's how bad he sounded.

From that day on , I realized U2 is strictly an overproduced studio band. Don't get me wrong, I still like their music, but I think they are way overrated.

Its the luck of the draw.

Am i defending post 1991 U2?

I'd take Guided By Voices over U2 any day! Never saw them (GBV) live but heard it was quite something, what with the drunkenness of Pollard.

I will say that I do like the earlier U2 stuff...and the occasional song they release.

I love GBV too (Fav tune: The Official Ironmen Rally Song from Under The Bushes Under The Stars), but I don't know if I'd call them the best band in the world...

I'd say that U2 certainly qualifies for one of the most successful bands of all time.

Yeah, U2 lost me after the Joshua Tree. Achtung Baby and Zooropa was too much of change. They are certainly Bono and Edge's band. My favorite song is still the live version of A Sort of Homecoming.

I really like GBV. I started to get into GBV this year and think they were excellent song-crafters. Bulldog Skin and Scientist are on my iTunes most played list.
