: Panther DVD Player on Lombard G3 400
idextrus Dec 18th, 2003, 06:55 PM Does anyone know why DVD Player isn't installed when Panther is installed on a Lombarad Powerbook G3 400? This is really frustrating as I use the as my DVD player for the kids when we travel. I know that I can boot into OS 9, but that is not the point. Any help would be appreciated.
JumboJones Dec 18th, 2003, 07:08 PM I too have shared that frustration but unfortunately the Lombard video card is not supported for DVD playback in any version of OS X, not even in classic. It wasn't until Jaguar that it was even supported! One would need to download a videocard fix. tongue.gif
This has been well documented in their discussion forums if you wish to look, but like me it will frustrate you more. There is another program you can use, I forget what it is called but don't bother the frame rate just sucks. So if you want to veiw a DVD you need to boot in OS 9, which really is not that big of a deal. :D
idextrus Dec 18th, 2003, 07:42 PM Thanks for the response Jumbo. that is what I figured. Merry Christmas!
lewdvig Dec 18th, 2003, 08:01 PM Hey guys,
Could I ask you to share your Lombard OSX experiences? I have a few Lombards and Pismo available to me and was wondering what you thought of yours. The difference is about $150.
Thanks!
Lawrence Dec 18th, 2003, 08:28 PM I have a few Lombards and Pismo available to me I would have preferred to have bought a Pismo,
If you have a choice between the two...Buy the Pismo.
Firewire and a better upgrade path along with higher ram are a
few of the reasons for buying a Pismo.
Although I am quite happy with my Lombard.
Dave
idextrus Dec 18th, 2003, 08:38 PM I will echo dolawren's sentiment. My Lombard has been great but wish I had the Firewire built in. 'Tis not my main Mac anymore though. Go for the Pismo for the extra cash.
idextrus Dec 18th, 2003, 08:40 PM and... further to the original thread, it may be the the Pismo will have a video card that supports DVD Player in Panther, although that is mere speculation. If it does, that to me would be worth the price of admission.
JumboJones Dec 19th, 2003, 10:13 PM I would go for the Pismo too. The video card is supported so you can watch DVD's in OS X, you can get twice the amount of ram in it, it has a faster bus and firewire. It also has G3 and G4 upgrade options for you in the future. I love my Lombard but I would trade it for a Pismo any day!
Carl Dec 20th, 2003, 02:33 AM Yes, my Pismo has 1 Gig of ram and is running 10.3.2. The DVD palyer works fine.
monokitty Dec 20th, 2003, 08:46 AM Anything under the Rage 128 does not support Mac OS X or DVD-playback, unfortunately. The Pismo boosts the Rage 128 graphics chip, therefore works with the DVD Player and OS X well.
