: old iphone as a door intercom
macmac Aug 20th, 2012, 12:54 AM I was wondering if its possible and if anyone is using an old iphone as a door intercom (mounted on the door).
As i'll be upgrading soon, im trying to find a new use for my old iphone and im thinking it might be kind of cool to have it as a door intercom (as a sole function only) All other programs deleted and maybe with a note to the side of the iphone to press the Phone and dial the contact (only one contact of course)
Am I smoking crack or is this possible? Also, I haven't figured out how I would secure the phone without the person taking it..minor hiccups ...lol

Great idea, as long as you don't mind the distinct possibility of someone grabbing the iPhone off of your door and taking it home with them.
John Clay Aug 20th, 2012, 08:10 AM I don't see the appeal, especially as you'd have to cover the design of the phone in something to secure/charge it, not to mention a heavy case to keep the rain/humidity/detritus out of it.

I can create a secure case. As for the rain, it'll be fine. It's a covered door. I actually have a house where builders had the foresight to build verandas into their designs

Veranda won't help with heavy humidity or condensation.
HowEver Aug 20th, 2012, 12:35 PM You can create a secure case...
What secures the case?
Unless you live in Finland (or another area where theft from your front door is relatively low or close to non-existent), the phone will be gone soon enough.

Or cold temperatures. Do they have winter where you live, Macmac?
macmac Aug 20th, 2012, 02:49 PM I don't live in 'the hood'
secondly its easy to create a case that is bolted/locked to the concrete
As for the cold temperature/humity/condensation....hmmm... that may be a problem... then again, its just going to be collecting dust real soon.
I figured someone would have tried this already...

I would just knock on the door.

Sell it?

My old iPhone makes for a great iPod Touch for one of my kids, and they also work well for things like Remote for the AppleTV or the Sound System throughout the house.
