: Should I sell my ATV2?
gowyn Aug 16th, 2012, 07:28 PM So looking on Kijiji I see atv2's going for a premium, ie over $200!
Upon further research I guess it has to do with the atv3 not being able to be jail broken at this point.
So out of curiosity I jail broke my atv2 to see what the big deal is all about. Now I should explain I never rent movies online, and stream music, tv shows and movies to the ATV via iTunes. Never had a problem and am quite happy with 720p
So tried out the jail broken ATV and sure there's a bunch more stuff there but honestly I don't really care. The time to set it up and the ongoing headaches of upgrading to me isn't worth the bother. I also tried out icefilms a xbmc addon and sure it looks impressive with the amount of online content. Up until I tried to watch something. Dead slow, kept stopping to buffer.
Anyway, I guess in theory I could sell my atv2 (two of them actually) for a tidy profit and buy the new atv3
How's that for an idea?

To me that says something is going to come shortly or they have found a hole.
Andrew Pratt Aug 17th, 2012, 09:39 AM 1Channel is better then Icefilms esp if you add the advancedxml file to increase the buffer size...but if those addon's don't interest you then sure sell it for a profit and buy a 3rd Gen model.
jezzy Aug 17th, 2012, 12:15 PM If having it JB'd isn't important to you then yes I'd sell them fast before an actual ATV 3 JB is released (then the ATV2 prices will drop big time).
I've had my ATV3 since release day.. just collecting dust.. waiting for the JB. All I want is XBMC or Plex so I can stream my content from my NAS box. I currently use a WDTv, which works.. but fugly interface.
If you want to swap, PM me! =)
dona83 Aug 17th, 2012, 04:15 PM WHOA! Definitely putting one of my old 720P ATV2s up for sale! I want an ATV3.
ldphoto Aug 17th, 2012, 06:36 PM I've kept mine when I bought the ATV3 for the living room and used it on a smaller TV in the house. I never realized that they were prized items :) I have no need of jailbreaking, I'm already well setup with content in iTunes on my server, so I may sell it.
I'm not sure what to do with my 40GB ATV v1 though... no netflix makes it rather useless for me now.

Makes for a great AirTunes speaker in parts of the house where you want music. I have one in the garage for example.
i-rui Aug 17th, 2012, 10:03 PM even the first gen apple tvs are selling for more than a new atv3 on the used market (because they can also be jailbroken)
gowyn Aug 18th, 2012, 08:29 AM nuts isn't it?
I almost feel guilty for selling them for more than I paid.
I guess I'll sell the pair for $300 and go buy some new ones.
Never thought about using the ATV1 as a music streamer though, good call.
Abby Aug 22nd, 2012, 03:19 AM "using the ATV1 as a music streamer though", cool!
I always use my Apple TV 2 as a home media centre in my drawing room, and really enjoy it with streaming many videos&movies to it.
gowyn Aug 22nd, 2012, 08:51 AM Well I ended up selling them.
Ended up emailing the buyer and telling him I changed my mind about the price, I was going to sell them for $300 for the pair but it's just wrong I feel to take advantage so sold them for $250. Enough to replace them with atv3's.
He kept asking if I was sure...haha
Just wrong I tell ya

Happy happy. Everybody win. 😄
okcomputer Aug 30th, 2012, 08:03 PM Thinking of doing this same thing. Plex is awesome, and I love being able to just use the small remote and my TV and not have to bother with my computer.
However, Plex also seems to have to be updated and when it isn't it breaks! I always know when a new version of Plex Media Server or the ATV client are out, because my Plex acts up until I upgrade both. I don't like the hoops you have to jump through for XMBC to find your shares correctly, and I really don't like the built-in media player from Firecore.
So, my question is: does AirPlay Mirroring through ML via an ATV3 work well? would it stream a 1080p video and sound just fine? My iMac is wired and so is my ATV if that helps.
If it's flawless, I could give up the ATV2...

No sure about 1080p, it should in theory. I've been playing 720p video to my ATV3 through my Macbook Air with no issues, obviously wirelessly. That's why I sold one of my Apple TV 2's (since they're hot on the market right now.)
I haven't tried 1080p, as I plan on having my iMac do all the streaming to the ATV 3, and it'll be done wirelessly since the MacBook Air is doing it with no problems.
