: Ethernet Network Down - Help Please

If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Came back after 2 week vacation to find that my home Ethernet network is down . It has been working for the past 6 years and nothing has changed! Here's my set-up:

Rogers cable modem is connected to an Apple Airport and then it enters an Assante 8-port FriendlyNet FH10T8 Hub. Ethernet is working up to the point that it enters the Hub and then anything out of the hub has no signal.

Can't print to the printer over Ethernet and strangely my iMac shows that that Ethernet is connected but When I pop a browser or check email - no connectivity.

Have done all the obvious turning on and off and the Hub doesn't seem to have a reset.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bernard

In all likelihood, it's your hub that has failed.

When you replace it, replace it with a switch - not another hub. Hubs are outdated, and serve no purpose in a modern residential network.

For the replacement, I'd highly suggest a Netgear ProSafe switch. They can be found all over the place, and have a lifetime warranty that's easy to claim. The link below has it for a decent price, but I've seen them as low as $49 with free shipping.

Canada Computers | Networking | Netgear GS108E, ProSafe Plus 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch - VLAN, QoS (http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_1045_355&item_id=037790)

Sounds like the hub is borked to me. Maybe you had a lightning strike or other surge or maybe it is just showing its age......

It sounds like the FriendlyNet is likely kaput. :(

But you could try doing all ethernet connections using the LAN ports only if you haven't tried already, and bypass using the “Uplink” and also avoid using the next port (#8 I believe on that hub) which is often in parallel with the “Uplink” port.

Using that method will make it just make it dumber really "dumb" hub and no speed loss with just a small network.
