: What I used my Apple TV for today...

Today I tried to actually pay for the latest Breaking Bad episode on the Apple TV (instead of getting a torrent or whatever). I'm a bit reluctant to pay for shows or movies on Apple TV since sometimes it screws you over with really slow speeds, etc. But I felt kind of lazy, figured it would be less hassle than getting a working file off the net, streaming it to my PS3, etc. It should work, right? Sure, sometimes there are problems but what are the chances it won't work today, the one time I'm willing to pay for content?

"The item you tried to buy is no longer available." It was added to iTunes yesterday, but that's fine. Saved me $3.49. At least I didn't have a room full of people expecting to actually watch something this time. "Ready to view in 2156 hours." Had that one before too (or something like it.)

Anyway, got a torrent going and used Mountain Lion's Airplay mirroring. It was easy and worked great. Thanks Apple!!

You snooze, you lose. At least you found an acceptable workaround.

With many shows, there is a window of opportunity on rentability, because of a relationship between iTunes and Netflix. They don't quite work like a library or video store in that the movie or TV show you want isn't always there the way you want it. If, say, you want to rent a particular show that has been available on iTunes previously but suddenly it's now only available to purchase and not rent, it may be because it's being promoted on Netflix this month so they are attempting to steer you there. If you see what you like, you're better off to rent it sooner than later, as it may not be there when you want it. Hence, you snooze you lose. This may not be applicable to your situation, of course.

Gotta love AirPlay though. We found Sliding Doors (1998 w/Gwyneth Paltrow) on a Chinese website after not finding it anywhere else, so I just beamed it from my iPhone.

It was released on iTunes yesterday, as I said. You seem to have completely missed the point of my story! No offence, just saying.

Sorry, my bad. Guess I went off on a tangent. So why was it no longer available after only a day do you think?

I get all the new shows in mp4 format and stream them via iTunes. Why would you have to use your ps3?

No problem. It's an error, or bug, in their system. Purchasing things on Apple TV is unreliable, which is one of the reasons it's a failure, imo. Whenever I use it I end up promising myself not to anymore, then a few months later I forget and am reminded again.

One, I don't get all the new shows in mp4 format. Two, I don't stream them via iTunes. That would mean getting them in mp4 format. Streaming to the ps3 is sort of like vlc media player - it has this magical ability to play more than one file type. Three, I DON'T have to use my ps3 anymore thanks to Airplay mirroring - one of the main points of my original post.

AirPlay mirroring does kick ass, although I can 't say I've had too many problems streaming movies on my AppleTV's over the past five years, provided said movies are available of course. Far from a failure at our house, ATV has been a godsend.

It does suck that AirPlay mirroring doesn't support hardware as recent as a two year old MBP.

I use EZTV.it (most tv shows are available here) and nearly all new releases are already in mp4 format for iTunes/Apple TV streaming....like breaking bad. Sometimes they are in mkv for a day until someone adds the mp4, but handbrake has those converted in about a half hour.

Guess you don't have Airplay mirroring yet. If you did you wouldn't care anymore.

Try AirParrot. It works great on my MacBook 2008 and iMac 2006 on Apple TV2.

Yes. It has other features too, like the ability to extend your desktop and mirror only one app at a time. It looks better than Airplay, actually, if it works well.

You'd think that ML would kill that program, but surprisingly it might start selling more. Lots of people can't use Airplay but want to. For 10 bucks AirParrot gives them something that's potentially better.

Yes. Depending on your TV resolution of course. Plus you can try it for free.

Also, AirParrot isn't sold through the App Store, so it's not so easy for Apple to kill.

Yeah, the Apple TV works for me too. Without it, you can't use Airplay...

AirPlay Mirroring was the main function I wanted in Mountain Lion, so I was disappointed to say the least when I couldn't find it after upgrading.

I've been contemplating upgrading to a 2011 model iMac or MacBook Pro, but it seems silly to spend $1000 just so I can use one function.

I tried AirParrot a few weeks back. I had issues with the audio and couldn't seem to come up with the right fix.

Just download the audio driver listed on the AirParrot page. Swear to god it works just great. I was surprised I hadn't heard about it before to be honest.

I have m4v files with subtitles which i had merged mp4 files with srt files using Handbrake. I should be able to view the video files on my HD LCD TV using Apple TV just like the iTune movies and shows? I am purchasing the Apple TV this week but being partially deaf need subtitles.
Update...I had just purchased my Apple TV 3rd gen. and loving it. Subtitles work great but the one drawback is the annoying translucent gray backdrop behind the white subtitles. What is with that? Seems to be no way to rid of that backdrop so far.
