2-2 Canada vs US, 20 minutes to go.
Out of tons of matches, Canada has only beat US like 3 times.

Hard to find fault with the winning goal (other than it came in extra time), but the penalty call leading to the tying goal was simply brutal....

To play the game of your life and to have victory snatched away like that... It's gotta hurt.

I watched the entire match... unbelievable effort. Christine Sinclair is all grit and shows why she's the captain. Tough loss but now we get to play for bronze... Let's Go Canada!

Yeah we lost but boy our Canadian soccer athletes played a great game of soccer. This is the first time I watched a whole soccer game whether men's or women's and thoroughly enjoyed it. Hope Japan beats the crap out of the US team. :D
PS Of course I'm going to watch the women's game against France and cheer them on.:D

I'm still livid from that call.

I've watched international and pro soccer fanatically since I was a kid. The last time I saw the "6 second rule" enforced was.... well... NEVER! That call is NEVER made, especially in a match as huge as that.

The reason... Pure and simple it's a screw job.

I want an investigation done. I smell corruption.

It isn't the first time there has been a Canada vs US game and the ref has made a completely bizarre call in the last moments of the game to change the outcome of the game:

9Ani9Wkx-TE

Listen to the commentators at very end of that clip, Canada over and over again in Canadian International Soccer is shafted by blatant bad calls by refs that decide outcomes of games.

To call that 6-second rule at that time of the Olympic game to give a free kick in the box... And then to further call that handball and PK when US needed a goal.

I smell corruption somewhere. Canada should lodge an official complaint and the IOC should investigate this ref. Unfortunately, there have been many proven cases of corruption in soccer officiating (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/story/2012/05/21/sp-fifa-meetings-corruption-officials.html), so much so that they've had to have anti-corruption drives. I know in my heart that something's afoul in that match, and I'm sick and tired of it.

I'm absolutely gutted and heart-broken for the Women's National Team, they deserved that game. :-(

I hoping beyond hope that Canada let's Christine Sinclair carry the flag in the closing ceremonies. It would be a great statement to the effort she and the CWNT gave in these Olympics. They should be playing for a gold medal next game, not the bronze.

+1, Well said Mr. Mayor.... "Gutted" ... me too! Haven't felt like that since my Blackhawks lost in overtime of Game 7 to Vancouver in 2011 playoffs.

FIFA to investigate soccer match (http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/2012-summer-games/FIFA+investigate+soccer+match/7052852/story.html)

Investigation is for incidents after the match. More than likely, some Canadian players like Christine Sinclair for having the courage to be critical of the screw job.

FIFA is a corrupt organization and they will come down hard on anyone suggesting foul play. FIFA accepted bribes in the millions of dollars from Russia to host the World Cup. There have been all sorts of other accusations from people who were formerly inside FIFA. Where there's LOTS of smoke, there's bound to be fire.

To be honest, I'm done with it.

The fix was in. FIFA has such an evident bias to the US in CONCACAAF. That's where the big money is and plenty of behind the scenes people who are willing to "play the game", shake the right hands, promote the right people, gift the correct "special gift".

If FIFA does any fines or sanctions to the Canadian team or players, I'd almost like to see them boycott the Bronze game in protest.

Nothing will come of any investigation. The sad fact is both calls are in the rulebook.

I'm actually not terribly upset about the penalty call. It was a tough call, but i've seen that given. Her arms did move up.

The "delay of game" call that led to the indirect free kick in the box was an absolute joke. I've been watching football for most of my life and i've never seen that given. it's always been a warning, and then a yellow card.

But the truth of the matter is the rule does exist in the rulebook (even though no ref actually calls it that way), so i don't see anything FIFA or the IOC can do about it.

Unfortunately and unwillingly. I have to agree. Most ref do not make the 6 seconds call does not mean she cannot make that call. Experience of the goalie make a difference. Most goalie will hold the ball for a few seconds and drop it to the ground, wait for teammates to move up the field then kick the ball.

Still proud of the team, they played a strong game.

Disciplinary decision will come after the Bronze medal game. Will most likely be a slap on the wrist.

Go Canada

Was further reading about the US Women's team, how in their contract, each of them is paid a wage to make a respectable living of about $40,000 - $70,000. (Plus any endorsements or gigs on Dancing with the Stars)

Know for a fact that most of the Canadian Women's players make absolute peanuts, not even enough to even cover travel expenses and most have part-time jobs.

Just an additional perspective on what Canada was up against, never mind the tremendous population difference.

Some follow up notes to the game...

The game was watched by 14 Million Canadians. Even the PM chimed in on his thoughts of the game.

Following the game, US goal keeper, and Dancing with the Stars person, and all around mega itch-bay had this to say of Sinclair's performance: ""We made her look good", then went on to throw her teammates under the bus: ""We didn't win those air battles."

Then Morgan from team USA: ""I don't think they were a fit as we were," Morgan said. "I saw them on the ground more … [My goal] was the last second of the game, it was about who is the fittest, who is the strongest, and we showed that."

I hope Japan socks it to team USA AGAIN in the finals.
