: MBP won't stay asleep, most of the time.

I have a Santa Rosa MacBook Pro... Vintage 2006 or 2007, not really sure. If I try to put it in sleep mode it will wake up within a few minutes, sometimes seconds. I am not really sure what is causing this and therefor not sure how to fix it. I have used google, and while I did make some progress, it has let me down.

I have tried:
-SMC reset
-PRam reset
-Starting in safe mode (seemed to work once, but not consistently repeatable).
-Disabling IR wake in System Preferences
-Changing the wake options in the Power Management plist.
-Repairing permissions.
-Disabling Bluetooth, airport. This worked once... not repeatable.
-Running the MBP with no USB devices. This seemed to work a couple of times, and then added devices until it doesn't work and then go back to a previous configuration that had worked, which now doesn't.

All the software is up to date, but as I recall this problem existed from a fresh clean install, I could ignore it then, not so much now (Its working as a desktop). I am sure I have tried more, but haven't found any way to have a reliable sleep for the MacBook Pro.

System logs indicate that the cause is from a USB device, even when none is attached. Specifically it says that the wake reason is EHC1.

I am concerned it might be related to the logic board as I have had 1 kernel panic on this computer (recently), but everything seems to be running fairly smoothly.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to my life.

I've had to deal with this on my late-2008 MacBook (Aluminum) and my current late-2011 MacBook Pro, across various OSes.

Major pain in the ^&*( to diagnose. Tried, have given up. Hoping somebody has more perseverance than I do...

If it's Santa Rosa, then it's mid-2007 models (MBP 3,1):

MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.2 15" (SR) Specs (Mid/Late 2007, 2.4/2.2GHz*, MA895LL, MacBookPro3,1, A1226, 2136) @ EveryMac.com (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2.2-15-santa-rosa-specs.html)

EHC 1 is in fact USB, however, not necessarily externally connected device. It could be Bluetooth or even Wireless adapter since they are also on USB bus.

Turn Bluetooth off, Wireless off, disconnect all USB connected devices including USB hubs, disconnect Ethernet and generally remove anything "external". If you use ExpressCard applies to that too.

Reboot, then try and see if it still wakes up from sleep on its own. If it doesn't reconnect one of the above, restart and test again. Then reconnect another one and so on. Hopefully this helps you discover the culprit.

I have a Santa Rosa too and this happens once in a while. A restart typically solves it which makes me think it's more of a soft/driver issue.

Figured this, just being lazy to verify.

Have tried this, inconsistent results.

Have read that post.

My issue doesn't seem to be a software one with it exiting after multiple clean installs. I'll probably try going back to an older os at some point.

I have ignored this issue for a few years, just now that it's s desktop replacement, it's more of a problem.

I'm guessing that you've checked out Apple's articles, and possibly Ad nauseam:

Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776)

OS X Lion: If your Mac computer won?t go to sleep or stay in sleep (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4232)

Anything lurking in Activity Monitor that might give a hint of some app or process that might be the cause?

had checked those articles out a couple of times.

I also have been checking out processes, nothing seems to be unusual.
