I've got this older Macbook running on Tiger and I'm wondering if it would be useful to upgrade to a newer OSX. It seems to run fine, of course faster would be nice, but what would updating the OSX provide that I don't get now with Tiger? I don't think I need Mountain Lion, and from what I understand, I can't upgrade to it anyway!

Also, how much would an upgrade be?

I doubt that anyone here knows what you use or do with your 2008 MB, nor what you might want to do with it.

Checkout your model for specs and its capabilities at everymac.com and then decide what you want to do.

PS: Mac OS Tiger 10.4.x is basically dead and no longer supported. And no doubt your MB will need more RAM memory installed in order to update to a later OS X version, and the later may be a hassle to do since Apple's release of its latest Mountain Lion pussy cat.

You're correct...No, I don't read much here often;)

All I'll want to do is what I do now: surf web, edit dox in Word, occassional use of PowerPoint, listen to music via iTunes, download photos from my digicam.

I've upgraded to 4GB RAM and have OSX 10.5.8. Is there a reason why I should upgrade my OSX? Ie. Is there a huge benefit to using a more updated OSX if I'm not using my machine differently? The only thing I have a problem with is listening to band's music on MySpace but can't see why upgrading is useful.

As you saw at the everymac site, that MB can run OS X 10.7 "Lion" but I would NOT advise doing so.

I would however upgrade it to SL 10.6.8 which is a nice sweet spot for those models and is still supported and almost the bottom OS X for most new apps, and has a lot of nice improved Leopard features.

If you go to SL you get a dedicated Intel OS, which actually provides a performance enhancement and minor disk space savings over Leopard.

If you go Lion, you get support for iCloud as well as some of the newer features such as Mission Control, Launch Pad, etc...

I have to disagree with pm-r, I've installed Lion on literally dozens of this generation black and white MacBooks, and it runs very well with 4GB RAM.

If you really want to give that machine new life, and depending on your hard drive storage needs, you could consider updating your HDD to an SSD (prices have dropped like crazy recently!)...

I just suggested SL 10.6.8 for the OP based on what they said they used their MB for, and it seems they don't need or really want any Lion stuff. Adding to the fact that many users who tried Lion went back to SL.
