: Looking for mouse for MBP

Hi,

I'm looking for a wireless mouse for the new Macbook Pro (15" non-Retina) I just bought and was hoping for some recommendations. I figure it'll be useful at university this fall. :D

I've never used a Bluetooth mouse so it's definitely an option, but as long as they are quick to set up to the MBP. USB is fine too though. I tried the Magic Mouse at the Apple Store but my hand started hurting after 5 minutes. I would have preferred the wireless Mighty Mouse but they don't sell it anymore.

Any recommendations would be appreciated! (not too expensive though)

I like this guy:

Logitech® Gaming Mouse G400 (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/gaming/mice-keyboard-combos/optical-gaming-mouse-g400). :) I think I paid about ~$40 for it.

I like my Dell BT Travel Mouse. Pairs beautifully, also has two extra customizable buttons. It is a travel mouse so it's small but I can use it for hours on end comfortably.

That looks nice, but I'm looking for a wireless mouse.

Hmm, that seems alright, but it looks a bit pricey for a mouse like that. And the size isn't that great considering space is not an issue.

I'm curious to know why you prefer wireless over BT. If its a matter of ease of setup then BT is a no brainer. You would also avoid an extra "wireless dongle" that would take one of your (not many to begin with) USB ports.

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say that I preferred BT over wireless. I don't really have a preference, but from what it seems, BT seems easy to set up so I should be okay with that. And yeah, only 2 USB ports on the MBP so BT wouldn't be nice I guess.

Does it have to be a mouse? Ever consider a trackball? Logitech makes a nice one! Also the wireless performance mouse is very nice!! I have one that id sell you if you're interested!

I, and several I have mentioned it to and also purchased, have never used such a smooth mouse as the Logitech USB wireless M705 our local Costco store is selling for $29.00.

With Logitech software added, and a good quality mouse pad really makes it even smoother.

It's fast, smooth, no wake up delay or lag at any time that most BT mice I've used display and exibit. And oh yes, it's two AA batteries are rated to last 3 1/2 years!!

I bought mine in March as I had been looking to replace my older mice and the Apple mice were not an option with my experience.

I just checked mine which has never been turned off and it says battery @ 75% and 851 days remaining.

I use a Logitech VX Nano at work and really like it's size. At home I use the bluetooth trackpads.

From the first post:

I, too, love my Magic Mouse, but it seems it's not the right fit for OP.

Sorry - guess I can't read :)

I found that you have to adopt a different style with the magic mouse. Lightly grip it with your thumb on one side and your ring and pinky on the other. Its easy enough to slide around then and you can use your index finger to slide up and down the surface for scrolling. Don't try to use a death grip like with those large mice from MS that you hold more like a ball in your hand :)

I found that asking others for a recommendation on a mouse is pointless.
Every ones hand is different, the way they hold the mouse is different - what might be a very comfortable mouse to use for one can be totally useless for the next person.
When I need a new mouse that I'm going to use regularly and a lot, I go to Stables or Future Shop or Best Buy and hold each one they have on display to see how it feels.
The ones that feel good to me, and there are usually very few, I then check out on the net a bit more.

The last really good mouse for me was a Logitech MX510. It's quite big but fits my hands perfectly.
I actually scouted around to get a few more long after Logitech discontinued them simply because I liked them that much and I had a few Macs I wanted to use them on.

OP says he liked the Mighty Mouse - that is still available, just not from Apple.

For a MacBook I would also go for a BT mouse simple because USB ports are at a premium. No point buying a wireless mouse with a dongle - might as well buy a wired mouse with its advantages.

I got it on sale for $20. :) It's normally $30 which isn't bad. The mouse is very ergonomic and comfortable to use despite its size, I use it for a full 8 hour day.

I love magic mouse's usability and its multi-directional scrolling capabilities are unrivaled, however, from an ergonomic point of view it is one of the worst mice in the market.

I try to limit my usage to no more than 2 hours a day.

I ended up getting the Logitech M705 with the USB receiver like pm-r suggested. It was priced at 23.99 ($6 off the regular $29.99) at Costco, so if you bought one recently, you might want to go back. :)

I'm quite satisfied because it aligns perfectly with my old wired Mighty Mouse. It has the side button (which I use to view the desktop) and also the scroll bar button (I use to see all app windows). It's actually better than the MM because it has back/forward buttons! Of course, I do use up valuable USB slots (only one left with the mouse plugged in), but that's not really a problem for me. It's not often I have to plug in more than one device anyways. I'm sure there's a mouse like what I described out there with Bluetooth, but I don't think it would be at this price.

krs - you mentioned that you could buy a Mighty Mouse not from Apple. From where (assuming new)?

I see tons of them on Froogle.

Also new ones and used ones on eBay.

Depends what you are looking for exactly - and how much money you are willing to spend.
Doesn't look as if the MM wasthat popular, I personally didn't like it.

Hmm, well I thought the Mighty Mouse was pretty good, but maybe I just liked the way I set it up. A bit expensive though compared to Logitech's mouse.

My next mouse might just be the Logitech Performance Mouse MX, but for $100, I think I'll wait for a better price.

Wow!! I thought their $30.00 price was good, so I might dig up my March 2012 sales slip and see on my next visit as it would cost $6.00 just in gas for a separate trip to our local Costco store.

I ended up turning off the thumb button as I kept pushing it with a long click/drag across my 24" iMac display.

As for USB ports, the clients I was at yesterday had a very nice small compact 4 port USB extender/adapter but they couldn't remember where they bought it and I haven't come across such a nice little useful to some unit.

I'm still glad and thrilled I got my M705, as it also has no lag or delay at anytime as most BT mice have and the BT devices apparently are NOT easy on batteries and use much more power.

PS: a local Mac user who also appreciated my Logitech M705 recommendation had a glitch as did I with the vertical scrolling speed suddenly like cold molasses, and no changes to any settings would fix it. But the solution was easy:
"Please remove the batteries from your mouse, and with the batteries removed press and left and right mouse buttons repeatedly for approximately 15 seconds. ..."

A useful tidbit I found out about the M705 is that can operate on one AA battery instead of 2! :D Very neat indeed.

As for the USB ports, I might just get a cheap USB hub from Amazon.

I have had no end of problems with a wireless mouse - nothing technical, I just move them somewhere when I get called to the phone or get interrupted on the computer somehow and then I spend time searching for it.
They need to add a locate function like they have for cordless phones.

Anyway, for me it's a wired USB mouse only - trouble is all the ones I like the feel of only come in wireless, either with a dongle or bluetooth.
The Logitech MX 510 was one of my favourites, there doesn't seem to be a similar current one by Logitech but I got lucky and found an MX 510 on the net for less than $18,- shipped. So I ordered that to have a spare.

Really? I have never had this happen once... why would you take your mouse away from where it is being used, i.e. your computer?

Like you, I was always an insistent wired mouse user until I came across the wireless Logitech M705 at Costco in March as they have an excellent return policy and I had been looking to replace an old Logitech mouse that was getting a bit goofy, so I said why not, I'll give the wireless Logitech M705 a try.

Well, I wish you could have seen the smile of satisfaction on my face!! ;)

The only trouble with it, except for a small reset I had to do a few weeks ago due to a slow vertical scrolling problem, I sometimes knock it sideways off the mousepad and desk, and invariably it lands in the darkest, backmost corner under my large computer desk.

I was thinking I might add a cord or string to it if I can't train myself to not knock it off my desk to make any retrieval easier than crawling under my desk. But a wooden yard stick often helps to make the retrieval easier.

Maybe you could use one of those cords with a small clip and clip it to your clothes. ;)
