: Western Digital buys G Drive..
macintosh doctor Jul 31st, 2012, 11:06 PM Sadly I found out today that Western Digital purchased G Drive and now we have a great product that will go to crap.. :(
So much for having excellent products.. Yet another product I can no longer recommend..
I will not be surprised to see them selling at Costco next to the other crap products now.
pm-r Aug 1st, 2012, 12:29 AM What are some of your specific complaints and/or problems with Western Digital and their hard drives?
And are you referring to their internal or external drives?
Certainly not my experience and I have and still use both internal and external WD drives, and some of my external WD Premium FW/USB combo drives are WELL passed their expected life span!!
gwillikers Aug 1st, 2012, 01:23 AM I think he's likely referring to their flimsy plastic external cases that are quite prominent these days.
I have a older G-Drive external, and it's a very nice case, just as nice as the OWC Mercury cases. Hopefully that kind of workmanship will endure under the WD banner.
julian_photo Aug 1st, 2012, 07:49 AM First segate buying Lacie and now this. Makes for an interesting change in the marketplace. I have a feeling we will see G-Drives stay the same for a while. Hopefully it just means the drives inside the cases will change. If there weren't WD already. I honestly don't know.
broad Aug 1st, 2012, 09:05 AM They've been hitachi for a while as hitachi owned g technologies, assuming thats what he is talking about

Hitachi will no longer be inside.. instead it will be WD drives which I have had nothing but horrible experiences.. where they die in a short span and WD doesnt make a drive that is worth calling production or enterprise that I would use..
plus the cases that they use are all plastic monsterously large and ugly.
When you say WD - I think great lets go to Costco and buy case condoms and crate of pickles for $10 .. people think right away with purchases made at costco : bad quality, built for quantity
That has been my experience..
Gdrives have been great quality and came pre formatted for mac.. - only drive i knew that did that.. now its all down hill and PC from here.

I don't know I have about 30 WD drives in a production environment as I only buy them and they have been running 24/7 365 for about 7 years straight without a hiccup. (knock on wood) Same can't be said for Seagate drives where those that I had lasted from 1-3 months.

macintosh doctor Aug 1st, 2012, 10:33 AM :lmao:
Busy week you got planned there.
Seriously though, I've had a similar experience with WD as Joker_Eh. Pretty solid in my opinion.
La Cie - when they used quantum drives it was a 50/50 chance it will fail..
then they switched to WD and hell broke out.
but since they have been using hitachi as well and seagate.. I have had great luck with them..
so I hope the move to WD for g Drive doesnt mar their reputation.
- but I will no longer recommend them. I hate dealing with RMAs.. especially with US companies.
[as for the pickles and condoms, that was a Freudian slip - LOL but still why else go to costco.. ? ]
DempsyMac Aug 1st, 2012, 10:35 AM Just to clear things up for those that don't know (not that this changes what label is on the drive inside the enclosure but should give some info none the less)
G-Tech was purchased by Hitachi (http://www.macworld.com/article/1138992/hitachi.html) back in 2009, and since the G-Tech has been operating as part of Hitachi (Hitachi Global Storage Technologies or HGST). This has not really effected there biz other then always haveing Hitachi drives inside, and given them access to more capital.
In March of 2011 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitachi_Global_Storage_Technologies) Western Digital (WD) agreed to take over HGST.
So yes now (although not really all that recently) G-Tech is now owned by WD I would have to say that if you have not seen a change yet I would not worry too much, WD is a really big company and they like many other large companies want to have different brands that appeal to different customers, G-Tech would be just one of those.
Anyway hope this helps clear something up for someone, as I just spend 5 min of my time googling links to back my story.
Enjoy!

Still doesn't change my opinion of WD..
DempsyMac Aug 1st, 2012, 10:47 AM not saying that it should, just saying that it may change your opinion on G-Tech as this is not a new thing.
Kina reminds me of the days when people used to love Apple ink-jet's but hate Canon injet's until I told them that Canon makes Apple's ink-jet printers (or HP depending on the time/model we were talking about)
Joker Eh Aug 1st, 2012, 10:49 AM Plus I wouldn't go to Costco to buy any production drives.

I know but still you have winners that do..
what do you think keeps us in employed..
people who buy drives at walmart and costco, then require my technical support LOL
Lets hope G drives dont change for the worst but I am not holding my breathe - I will bet the fist thing they do is change the 'mac format' as standard to PC format..
then from there quantity vs quality kicks in and WD will bleed the brand for what its worth.
then it will be next to the condoms and pickles at costco.. LOL
broad Aug 1st, 2012, 12:25 PM i think your unusual focus on phallic objects today bears scrutiny

I think that only makes it worse.
gwillikers Aug 1st, 2012, 05:04 PM I have had nothing but great luck with WD drives. Black drives and green drives alike. Not a stinker in the bunch so far, and I have at least 6 of them, the oldest being over 5 years old.
Before that I used Seagate.
