I have an i5 2.66 27 inch iMac with mountain lion. I see the "show mirroring options..." under display in preferences, so I assume my model supports this, but it does not show up in the menu bar. Anyone else have this working, is my iMac not supported but shows the option in preferences anyways?

You need a Mid 2011 iMac or later - otherwise unsupported. Under System Prefs > Displays, it would show, "AirPlay mirroring:" < If you don't have this, you don't have support.

Thats disappointing, not a feature I really need, but I would think an i5 iMac with 12 gigs of ram should be able to handle screen sharing.

It has to do with the video cards having built in hardware acceleration for the codec Apple uses to transmit the video. If you don't have a video card that does it then it requires a lot of CPU power so Apple chose not to allow it. There are 3rd party solutions that offer similar functionality if you really need it like Air Parrot
