Trouble is that the first guy who followed these instructions (and they seemed to work) then got an error message when he tried to use the USB stick to do an install.

Better to use the process listed in the Mountain Lion thread I think.

There's something interesting about making these install USB drives. I recently did a clean install of OS X 10.7 and of course created a USB install drive using an 8 GB drive & OS X 10.7.4. After following the steps, I kept getting an error while in Disk Utility just before it finished created the Install drive. However, I then tried to mount the drive to see what would happen and to my surprise, it came up as a Mac OS X Install ESD drive (assumption that my iMac recognized it as an install drive).

Just to make sure the Install drive was never corrupted, I restarted my iMac and attempted to boot up to my Install Drive. It booted up fine & I was able to install OS X Lion 10.7.4 without any further issues throughout the install process. Perhaps the Disk Utility error should be ignored AFAIC.

I used these instruction to create my USB install stick and it worked flawlessly.
