Hi

I'm frustrated. I've had my iPad (purchased new) a few months ago and I can't message from it. I've sync'd it from iTunes, checked everything but everytime I try and message it comes back with my contacts phone number in red and 'is not registered with iMessage'

Any ideas?

Thanks..

Do the people you are trying to message have an iPhone associated with that phone number?

If they do then ask them to see if they have iMessage turned on.

If the people do not have an iPhone or iMessage is turned off then you are unable to iMessage them.

Thanks for the reply...now just so I have this straight.

I can message from my iPhone to all my contacts (whatever phone they have) but I can't message the same contacts from my iPad unless they also have an iPhone.

I'm still shaking my head in disbelief...

The iPhone has two message services available to it. First is regular old text messages (SMS & MMS) which is a cell phone industry standard. Text messages cost money or have it built into your cell phone plan. Messages are sent over the cellular network so this limits this service only to cell phones.

The second is iMessage which is an internal Apple messaging service. iMessage allows you to send a message via the Internet to anybody with a device that has iMessage set up (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Mac). iMessage uses the Internet so as long as your device is connected to the Internet you can send an iMessage and it doesn't cost extra (as long as you don't go over your Internet cap).

An iPhone will automatically try to send an iMessage first but if the contact you are sending a message to is not an iMessage user then the iPhone seamlessly sends a text message instead.

So if you are sending an iMessage from an iPad to a cell phone number then that person would need an iPhone. The iPad can also send iMessages to email addresses that have an iMessage compatible device setup.

Thank you....now I understand!

You iPad is not a cell phone. It doesn't have a cell phone number therefore it can't send sms/mms messages.

No shaking needed of head, just a little common sense that's all.

Oh course you can use an app solution like TextMe. Then you can text anyone.

That may require sending all your contact info to the developer server.
