: Saskatoon berry pie and other delicacies
winwintoo Jul 17th, 2012, 10:17 PM Its been years since I had Saskatoon pie. My son from Taiwan is arriving tonight and his one request was for Saskatoon pie. I baked two and they're still warm from the oven, so I had a sample. Wonderful.
For those of you who are displaced flatlandrs, the Saskatoons are good this year.
What other delicacies do you miss from your hometown?
G-Mo Jul 17th, 2012, 10:22 PM I lived in London (England) for 6 years, and I missed KD, poutine and late night pizza (kebabs are great, and I miss them now, but nothing is like a 2am Pizza Pizza slice!).
Dr.G. Jul 18th, 2012, 05:30 AM I was born and raised in New York City, and I can still sense the taste the lure of a Nathan's hot dog and home-made fries on the Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn, NYC.

My wife, who was born and raised in Alberta, spent the summers in their lake-front cottage in rural SK, and knows all about Saskatoon berries. One day, she was out walking our dog around a local pond, and saw a whole stand of these berries on bushes that were untouched by anyone. She called me to bring buckets to the spot where she waited. When I arrived with the buckets, we picked these berries, with everyone passing us by wondering what we were doing with these strange berries. To this day, she goes to the same spot every year to pick the berries no one else will pick .................. and we get a Saskatoon berry pie or two to enjoy.
gwillikers Jul 18th, 2012, 09:35 PM Our family has a long history of picking Saskatoon's and making pies. My wife often brings home enough for 2 pies after visiting her Mom each summer in Regina. We never get tired of Saskatoon pie, it's so good.
Believe it or not, we found some canned Saskatoon pie filling at Superstore last year, and it was actually pretty good. We've looked recently and it seems to have disappeared from their inventory completely. :(
winwintoo Jul 18th, 2012, 09:47 PM Dr. G, I didn't know they grew anywhere else. I thought it was a Saskatchewan thing. There are quite a few Saskatoon berry farms here now. Many of the native patches have been bulldozed to make way for other crops.
My son liked the pie, but his fiancé not so much. Food in Taiwan is quite different but she gave it a good try.
Gwillikers, I suspect that a goodly portion of luggage weight on every flight leaving Regina in the summer is pails of saskatoons :D

Margaret, there is a cluster of bushes along one of the urban trails we walk with our dogs. I guess no one is trusting enough to try these berries, since they are there each year, untouched ............... other than by my wife. She is amazed that no one else has discovered this gift of Nature.

She's also brought home complete frozen pies in insulated containers on many occasions too. They arrive still frozen. We go out of our way to have Saskatoon pie.
I'd kill for some right now. :)
dtaylor Jul 19th, 2012, 07:40 AM When I head to my native Alberta to visit, my outgoing luggage usually contains summer sausage and maple syrup.
I always return with Last Mountain Saskatoon Berry "jam type spread" and Coyote pancake mix (http://www.coyotepancakemix.com/), both found at the local Co-op grocery store.
I suspect the Saskatoon jam could be used as a pie filling, but I've only had it on toast and, of course, pancakes!

SINC Jul 19th, 2012, 08:30 AM Count me in as a Sakatoon pie lover. Will be going through both Saskatoon and Regina in the motor home a week tomorrow and will stop and try to find a couple to bring home.

If you hit Regina in either Wednesday or Saturday morning, the farmers market is downtown near city hall. They always have Saskatoon pie and pails of saskatoons.
Someone also has locally made vodka and whiskey. There's a brewery in Lumsden apparently. And they have a permit to sell the stuff at an open air market with minors wandering around! The scandal :eek:
My sister used to travel with frozen cabbage rolls in her luggage. When I visit my brother, I always pack some Roger's Golden Syrup, you can't make decent butter tarts without it. His co-workers know to bring back Hawkins Cheesiest when returning from Canada.
One of my neighbors has a son living in Los Angeles who orders frozen pizzas from Western Pizza here. My cousin from Thunder Bay detours through Regina so he can get a pizza from Houston's - only the best all dressed pizza in the world.
I have fond memories of Italian food at a restaurant in Toronto, calinari in New Brunswick, sour cream raisin pie in Tennesee, lettuce (yes, lettuce!) in North Carolina. My son in Taiwan hungers for plain old North American white bread.
Now I'm hungry and I think a slice of Saskatoon berry pie will go nicely for breakfast.
groovetube Jul 19th, 2012, 09:36 AM I used to look forward to saskatoon berry pies when I would go across canada, it's been a couple years since I've been.

Funny you should mention that Margaret. A bunch of us west coasters, who all grew up in Regina, have discussed meeting up for lunch on an upcoming Regina trip, and we all agreed that Houston Pizza is the place to go.
Second choice was Juliana Pizza, because that's neighbourhood we grew up in. But Houston has the better pizza for sure.

A word of caution about Houston's new location in the east end. It's pretty to look at, but I don't think their offerings are as good as the older ones like Albert st or Park st. You might like it fine, but I've been disappointed.

Thanks for that. We would likely be going to the Hill Avenue location. I think there was a time when it was the one & only location.
SINC Jul 24th, 2012, 11:02 PM Headed for Saskatoon and Regina on Friday. Staying at an RV park on the west highway in Saskatoon that normally has wonderful home made frozen Saskatoon berry pie for sale, so hope that holds true. Will buy a couple as that is all the room we will have in the motor home freezer. Sadly, they will be eaten at the family reunion in Grenfell and we do not go through Saskatoon on the way back. Dag nab it anyways.

Have a safe trip Don, and make sure you cut an extra big slice of Saskatoon pie for yourself. ;)
SINC Jul 25th, 2012, 07:04 AM Thanks Howie, that big slice is a great idea!
JumboJones Jul 26th, 2012, 01:47 PM Not from my home town but I visited Chicago a couple of years ago and had Peanut Butter Pie. It shocked the hell out of me that I've never seen it before, especially since it was delicious. I guess I need to take a road trip if I get a hankering, although hitting DQ for a reese peanut butter cup blizzard might be more cost efficient.
