: Retina - first look for me

Pssst - a little birdie whispered there may well be drive upgrades for the 2.3 owners in not too distant future.

••••

Just playing with the Retina now - still finding annoying things about Lion - why did they remove remaining time from the battery and really need to turn off auto-correction in safari. How do you turn the damn thing off.

Still don't like Chesire tricks - stooooopid

HD on Netflix was nothing to write home about but then that may have been Netflix.

The smooth resolution at low rez will be a big time boon for those with eyesight challenges - that really works.
It's almost too bright full up but with the backlight down it's very easy on the eyes.
No option to put resolutions in the menu-bar - dumb given the display capabilities.
4 iterations into Lion and the next one around the corner and still some basics not in place. Why have a highly configurable screen and no easy way to access?

Keyboard feels nice. Seems an improvement. Lighter touch but more feedback. Machine feels much lighter than the previous gen but feels sturdy unlike the Air which does not feel solid to me to work on.

Will try some serious reading later see how the battery life does but not having it in the menu bar is annoying.
So far it pleasing tho in no way earth shattering - Lion retains it's annoyance.

Seems to run much cooler but then I don't have much going at the moment. That's it for the moment. Minor annoyance that the power adapters are not universal. That's gonna frustrate anyone that forgets theirs but I can see the need.

These are both MacBook Pro Retina issues/differences, not Lion (the time remaining removal is also present on the mid-2012 MacBook Airs too). On every other machine running Lion, the options still exist.

Thanks - where's Apple's head at?? - seems a rush job....gonna full blown take the plunge tho and see if I can tolerate Lion.
Going to watch Spidey while the transfer goes on..many hours of Mail chewing ahead
Difference in weight is obvious in handling the two.

Screen does not do all that much for me as yet except for the multiple useable resolutions which do.

Anyone know of a iPhoto hack that lets the slide show run in it's own window??

It's also a "feature" on Mountain Lion. there's no way to show "Time Remaining" in the menu bar anymore. You can turn on Percentage. Or not. If you click the battery indicator in the Menu Bar you can see time remaining. I really hope 10.8.1 changes this back to showing Time Remaining.

Things were going well until a finder hang up that would not let go - could close all the apps but no way to exit the Finder without a hard restart.

Not thrilled with that and seems some others have similar issues - it exhibits as a beachball after stuttering a bit.

hmmmph - as we speak a new update for Airs and Pro.

some of the people in that thread are fricking mouth-breathers

This computer should be a simple joy to use and also offer 32GB of RAM and 2GB of VRAM like all professional Windows 7 mobile computers.

like...sometimes i curse the internet for giving people like this a chance to make their voices heard.

Noticing the speaker is improved certainly for voice on Skype.

Keyboard has a better feel - I'm usually a bit marginal on the lappie keyboards but this one has better tactile and sound.

Trackpad feels a tad different as well - finding not so many annoying inappropriate gestures - not sure why. Clcik action is consistent and light and small finger motions land more accurately than my 2011

Power source is a bit harder to connect but more firmly engaged - the converter for older magsafe powersupplies works well but easy to lose.

Headphone out is very easy to locate.

Still can't get a solid feel for battery - will have to undertake a test.

Screen is "smoother" - some fonts look bolded so might have to play around a bit but Safari does a pretty good job and easy on the eyes.

Do like the one handed ease of handling - remarkably stiff for the size and thinness.

Heat dispersion is much improved and can't really ever hear the fans.

I've not had that Finder crash again - updated with the download from Apple.
Possible it was the third party Xrez issue which I have since removed.

So misplaced my reading glasses and too lazy to chase them down - switched the retina to the lowest rez and voila - perfectly useable

I'm assuming they dropped that "battery time remaining" feature because it wasnt all that reliable. For instance it might show, say, an hour remaining on your battery, but if you then fire up iMovie and start doing some heavy editing, you'll typically find that you won't get that full hour.

Time remaining is all relative to what you are doing.

well, the time remaining amount would always go up and down relative to what you're doing. if the machine is idle and it says 6 hrs and then you open iMovie and start exporting video you would always see the time change fairly quickly..

yup, always dependant on what your doing at that exact moment

Month later it's welded to me. Never feel it's heavy and just now working outside and the anti-glare is excellent.
Pretty pleased and mostly getting along with Lion as it fixed a mailer problem for me.

Some of the apps like Filemaker struggle with the screen and screenshots are over sized. What you see is NOT what you get.

Left side inputs are easier to find in the dark and I like the return to the square power adapter...it's a better fit than the original square ones.

Good stuff Apple - was skeptical but can't find much fault.

Luck of the draw - didn't cherry pick and so far no complaints from client cept for one found the stock settings a bit warm - had him cool it a couple hundred points and resolved it.
Hopefully Apple will deal with the IR bit.

I mean why not? By it, take t to food court, open it...if its bad take it back.

Or if you're ordering order like 4 return the ones that aren't perfect.

Is it really that much better than the high-res version? I mean, aside from the updated form factor, etc.. is the display noticeably better? I was really happy with how the high-res version looked.

The non-Retina doesn't even compare to the Retina, including the non-Retina high-resolution CTO display. The 'high-res' non-Retina display is nowhere near the 2880-by-1800 pixel resolution of the Retina display.

That's an over statement in my view - the non-retina glossy are very sharp and crisp but the retina's anti-glare and wide choice of useable resolutions make it a serious step forward.
I switch back and forth daily between R and non-R with no issue but my preference is for the Retina for both form factor and screen.
It's definitely far easier to handle and I'm on the lappie up to 18 hours a day moving around, out on the motorcycle etc. A chunk of that is reading, chatting with GF in Aus and forums but also work related.

Good tool, step forward.....13" will be a killer.
Once aspect is that due to the cooling it's easier to work with on your lap.

When I had the matte high res 15", I couldn't see the pixels under normal working conditions, so I find it hard to imagine I'd need/want the retina for that reason alone. Guess I gotta see one in person to be sure... one without the issue 'ir' issue.

The 13" would definitely benefit from it though. IMO, the current ones look like crap. I can't stand to look at one for even a few seconds.. all I see are pixels. Same with the older gen iPhones, iPads, etc.

What about the lag? Is that a noticeable issue with the ultra high resolution? I've been reading people comment that the video card can't keep up or something... is it more related to software not being optimized for the higher resolution?

broad
Aug 19th, 2012, 09:49 AM
I never saw any lag or tearing when scrolling...on either the integrated card or the discrete one

MacDoc

I suspect it's software - some apps at some resolutions are weird - multiple images when you move things.

Well, once you've seen it, you can't unsee it. I had a high res 15" and can't go back. I typically work with the highest
more space setting (1920x1200?), and love the clarity and the real estate.

True to a point and if ML isn't being used, but CCC 3.5.1 is highly recommended for ML use.

CCC is the best and most reliable backup software IMHO, and I have made two donations since 2007 and later for over $65.00 total as I found it was worth that amount.

My CCC is now updated at no charge to the new 3.5.1 version thanks to their update donation policy.
