ldphoto Jul 16th, 2012, 11:09 PM Wow, that sucks. Was this a break-in, or stolen off his person?
MacDoc Jul 16th, 2012, 11:56 PM Vehicle I think. He did not give me details - just asked where to look and he emailed the serials. Was seriously pissed.

Wouldn't that require someone to login into the user account and access wifi? If they wipe the computer this would not work no?

No idea. Questions for Apple. The Wifi part you may be right but wiping it I think it would still work.

I started putting "prey" and "find my iphone" apps on all my ipods and imacs and macbooks and cats (okay not the last one). Bummer having stuff like ipods and computers stolen which unfortunately is not to uncommon now days.

helps to have a guest or managed account turned on so the thief can get in and use the machine. no access=no screenshots/photos=hard to catch crooks
dona83 Jul 17th, 2012, 06:20 PM Find my Mac is tied to the machine, not the operating system installation, until someone associates the machine to a new iCloud account that is.
mpompian Jul 19th, 2012, 09:16 AM My name is Michael and I am the one that got my 2 macbooks and an iPad stolen from my car across the street from the Museum of Civilization (sort of ironic, eh?) on 7/14
I saw this posting which could easily be my computer which I purchased brand new from the apple store in St. Louis USA on 6/22/12. I tried to buy it but got no reply. Any ideas?
Thanks,

MacDoc Jul 19th, 2012, 10:48 AM Thanks for help everyone - I also suggested police help now there is a lead and participate here.
krs Jul 19th, 2012, 01:39 PM Well, the Kijiji ad is pulled already....
And would the police go on a wild goose chase based on a hunch?
What are they going to do - knock on the guys door and demand to see his Mac?

dona83 Jul 19th, 2012, 02:08 PM All the best to you, Michael. I had my car broken into once, not just bummed that I had so much stuff stolen, it was just the feeling of being so violated. They took EVERYTHING, even work reference material which has absolutely no monetary value to anyone, drilled my ignition as well. The repairs under insurance was under $1,000. I should've brought everything in but I was bummed having suffered a pretty bad loss in a recreational hockey league, good thing I brought most of my hockey equipment in.
krs Jul 19th, 2012, 02:26 PM No, but if you met Mr. Ogden and the serial numbers matched, they'd come pretty quickly.
Looks like we're past that stage already.
Since the ad on Kijiji is already pulled, that means that particular computer was either sold or if it was in fact one of the stolen MacBooks, the thief became suspicious and cancelled the ad.
More likely the latter if this was in fact the stolen Mac since few people go to the trouble to cancel a Kijiji ad after the item is sold.
I haven't seen the ad, but I assume that
a. it was posted after the theft date and
b. the asking price was suspiciously low.....
Is there no way to look at deleted ads on Kijiji?
krs Jul 19th, 2012, 02:29 PM I had my car broken into once, not just bummed that I had so much stuff stolen...........
The "trick" is not to "invite" the thieves by leaving valuables in plain sight.
They need to be locked in the trunk - then the only incentive to break into a car is to actually want to steal it.
dona83 Jul 19th, 2012, 02:33 PM As I said, I was pretty bummed. Lesson learned. Still...
krs Jul 19th, 2012, 02:46 PM Yeah, I know....
The damage to the car is often more than the value of what was stolen.
As to the issue at hand - wouldn't the normal household insurance cover that loss?
My insurance covers the loss of any personal property even if it is lost/stolen away from my home.
HowEver Jul 19th, 2012, 04:11 PM Why do you need the ad?
If that was the stolen Mac, I'm not sure what the ad gives you that my post above doesn't.

I don't need the ad.
I was just interested to see if there was anything specific in the ad that caused Michael to believe it was his stolen one that was advertised - like some special unusual configuration, or two MacBook Pros being advertised - anything unusual.
dona83 Jul 19th, 2012, 05:00 PM Estimated value of goods stolen was about $750, not worth paying a $500 deductible over and increasing my rates.
My credit card covers lost and stolen items for 90 days from date of purchase, are there any credit cards that cover longer?
krs Jul 19th, 2012, 05:07 PM By "issue at hand" I meant Michael's loss, I assume that was around $2500.- plus the damage to the car because of the break in.
dona83 Jul 19th, 2012, 05:41 PM Whoops. :o

What are you talking about ????
The stolen MacBook Pros were both 13-inch units, this one in your post is a 15-inch MB pro
Mckitrick Jul 19th, 2012, 09:09 PM Sorry for your bad luck Michael! Us Canadians are actually quite nice, I assure you. Crackheads are everywhere though. I hope you retrieve it somehow. Was Apple of any assistance?

just letting you all know it is not one of the stolen ones by the specs

Kelman - I'm still confused - is this the MacBook Pro in the Kijiji ad that Michael had posted and that has disappeared now?
I looked at Ottawa Kijiji and there are only two 13-inch MacBook Pros listed, neither one sounds like a possible candidate for the stolen one(s)

this was the original ad link provided by Michael the victim before it was removed
I responded to the ad right after Michael posted it

So the M O........ whose adress and phone number were posted here on an open forum had nothing to do with this.....
I would suggest the mods remove that information pronto.

Wonder how the person whose stuff was stolen mistook the ad for his 13"?

For any one who has not followed this thread on a regular basis.
G-Mo's comment before the edit was something like:
"Smells like a scam to me"
That's what the various replies were about that followed.
pm-r Jul 20th, 2012, 11:03 PM Coming in a bit late here, but I really don't understand why any compatible Mac or Apple iDevice user wouldn't have setup any of the various "find my mac or device" type options that are available, especially if they travel and therefore are great targets to those who just love to steal them.
Unfortunately whoever stole my eldest son's very customized MBPro in his carry case who had such a setup has never got around to opening it or let it turn on, but without any recharging or power up, I guess it seems to be lost forever. :(
Luckily his friend was luckier with his recent post:
"Another iPhone found its way home.
I love the find my phone feature! Some buster tried to steal my iPhone. I kept send pings to the phone and the person anonymously turned in phone to security. I watched them reluctantly move closer to the security desk, once I increased the pings...You gotta love technologically assisted consciousness!"
