If you're using Gmail, then this might work for you:

Google Notifier for Mac (http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/notifier_mac.html)

Just following up, did you have a chance to try out the Google Notifier yet?

Edit: I took SC's reference to Google out of context, SC does not use Gmail so the Google Notifier won't work.

Hmmm, I must be missing something here? I too use Mail, the only app I have ever used. Not only does a red dot show up in my dock Mail icon when a new email is received, but it dings as well. How much more notification does one need?

Dock hidden + sounds turned off would be one reason. I don't hide the dock, but all the annoying sounds apps make are turned off.

You're going to have to leave Mail.app open. That's the only way to display unread message notifications, other than using a service-specific program like the Google Notifier menu app.

Lemme see. Apple builds in a perfectly good Mail app with a dock that can be reduced so small as to not be annoying with built in notifications to alert you when you have mail, including sound which can be turned off. Then people hide the feature and demand someone else create a hack to display mail without the app even open. Yep, makes perfect sense to me.

Herald works fine and you can even read the mail but as others have mentioned the mail app needs to be open.
Herald is very configurable

And even have the Mail Dock icon bounce as well for new notifications that works with SL and I gather Lion as well.

And let me check - my Mail is idling as to my Mac's CPU load and using a small 120MB of memory.

I guess I'm not understanding to OP's question to get more notification, and why add another menu utility if one really exists that would probably use almost the same amount of CPU and memory?

Yeah, me too. Disable something that comes for free made by the guys who built the system who potentially know most about making it work trouble free.

Go for some third party hack that will likely end up in some sort of conflict with the systemor another hack and likely will go dead when there is a system update. Computers can be enough of a PITA without going out of your way to find trouble. Jes' my $0.02 Cdn. ;)

Not sure why people are piling on the OP for simply wanting to know whether there's a way to get email notifications in the menu bar. Calling such apps "hacks" and all of the rolly-eyes is a little over the top. Not quite the friendliest atmosphere, if you ask me.

Anyway, if the OP doesn't want to keep the Mail app open all the time, there's Notify (http://vibealicious.com/apps/notify/), which, as I understand it, will notify you if you're logged in to your iCloud webmail account.

MailCue used to have a menubar-based email client but seems to have been discontinued.

I used to use Google Notifier, but it was very slow to update... perhaps it's changed. FYI, for browser-based Gmail users, there's also a built-in desktop notifier located in the settings.

I'm running Mountain Lion, and Notifications is awesome. Official release is about a week, perhaps two, away.

I know that Mountain Lion will have the Notification Centre for this kind of stuff, but I am interested in having it push to my mac now.

Does Mail.app have to be running for Mountain Lion notifications to work?
