'Priceless' skeleton destroyed in latest fossil attack (http://www.edmontonjournal.com/technology/Priceless+skeleton+destroyed+latest+fossil+attack/6896947/story.html)

dinosaur skeleton found near Grande Prairie last month has been destroyed “by human hands,” scientists say.

The Hadrosaur skeleton was discovered by paleontologists on June 15 but was reburied to protect the fossils until they could be safely removed.

When Dr. Phil Bell arrived to move the fossil, he found the remains in ruins.

“They’d gone through and smashed indiscriminately,” Bell, a project paleontologist with the Pipestone Creek Dinosaur Initiative, said in a news release. “It’s an irreplaceable loss.”

Wow, I read they were still investigating. Maybe you should take the lead since you already have right suspects?

Unless you are one of those Christians who believes the earth is only about 6,000 years old, there is no reason for you to be offended.

If you are, well, then, let the games begin!

While I find it a shame that the bones were destroyed, being fascinated by them as a child, that is not the point. Just get sick of the constant hate mongering of any religious belief. Sorry, Christians are the preferred target. It is like when people tell me that one cannot be racist towards a white person, it is reverse racism then. Really!!!

The real tragedy is the bones were lost, not just to the scientists, but in this thread by a one liner that was dripping with elitism. I am not the one pushing my beliefs or lack there of on anyone, you were.

If that is enough to start a game? Please continue it on your own:ptptptptp

Why can't a mod step in and end this? Sorry CM, but your original remark was not only inflammatory, it was unnecessary and was the root cause of the derailment. A withdrawal is in order IMO as nothing in the linked story even remotely hinted at any such thing.

What kind of person does something like that?? Drunken teenagers is my guess.

The real reason as screature guessed, might be this:

The destruction isn’t an isolated incident. Three other fossils have been damaged at the dig site since May. In June, several bones were stolen from the dig.

The paleontologist says volunteers often find empty bottles and debris near the dig site and think the vandalism may have been alcohol-fuelled.

“[It's] trophy hunting," he said. "People want something to put on their mantel. I don’t think there is a black market for these things."

It's OK. The dinosaur will live on as gasoline for us to drive to Timmies.

More seriously speaking, this is insane. What kind of mouth-breathing moron would destroy something so ancient and beautiful? There ought to be a law...do we have antiquities laws in Canada?

Its a real shame.... To destroy the fossil... reminds me of how some drunken kids went and vandalized graver markers ,tombstones and a cenotaph somewhere a few years ago. These kids should be caught and made an example of! (if they indeed did do the vandalism)

This reminds me of a poignant example, my brother once lived in an apartment building in which there were some fairly troubled youths and someone was pulling the fire alarm on a regular basis. Finally the police did a stakeout and they caught one of the buildings crotchety seniors deliberately setting off the alarm. Turn out it was a frame up all along. The guy fessed up to trying to make everyone think it was "those kids". He was charged and the fire alarms stopped ringing.

What on Earth was the motivation there? Weren't the seniors just making life difficult on themselves by pulling the alarm too? Or perhaps they just stayed in bed while the fire department ran around frantically.

Humans are weird, weird, weird.

CM is pure class. That being said, I took the original comment as a joke, and I don't think it was intended as trolling; as far as I know we don't have any YECs around here.

As for the event in question, it is obviously an egregious case of vandalism, and sadly, these sorts of things are far more often done out of ignorance than malice; I suspect the culprits had very little idea of the magnitude of the damage they were doing. I hope they catch whoever did it, and if it does turn out to have been a considered act, it should be prosecuted most severely. If it turns out, as seems more likely to be the case, to have been an act of stupid drunken vandalism, it should similarly be prosecuted severely, but with the intent of rehabilitation, rather than retribution. Stupid young people can turn into wiser old people; but if the culprits thought what they were doing was achieving some desirable goal, there's probably no helping them.

No more so than most around here is, as his original post for which he apologized demonstrated. His apology and retraction was appreciated by those who took offence and I think most of those around here do the same (with a few exceptions) when they realize they have offended someone.

As for you taking the original comment as a joke.... why does that come as no surprise? ;)

Why does every g-d thread in this place have to turn into crap like this?

Back on topic:

Suspects identified in dinosaur fossil vandalism (http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2012/07/11/edmonton-dinosaur-vandalism-grande-prairie-suspects.html?cmp=rss)

A liquor-store receipt may help lead to the arrest of those responsible for the destruction of an “irreplaceable” dinosaur skeleton meant to be the centre piece of a new fossil museum in northern Alberta.

The receipt was found in a nearby camping site, along with some fossil fragments.

RCMP told CBC's Briar Stewart they now have suspects in the vandalism.

More idiocy in Alberta...

Vandals Strike Dinosaur Dig Sites In Alberta, Force Paleontologists To Take Extra Care (http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/07/22/paleontologists-vandalism-fossils-alberta_n_1692571.html)

Dinosaur expert Philip Currie was on a dig in the Alberta badlands a few weeks back, camping in a tent, when he learned that yet another fossil site had been vandalized.

The heartbreaking news was in an email which his wife received when she climbed high enough on a hill to get reception on her cellphone. The message said that a Hadrosaur, which had been discovered in the Pipestone Creek area near Grande Prairie in northwestern Alberta on June 15, was smashed to pieces and had been found by a crew returning to the site to carefully remove the bones.

The duck-billed dinosaur skeleton was intended to become a prized exhibit in a museum that's being built in nearby Wembley, Alta.RCMP say they are investigating the Hadrosaur vandalism, but don't have any suspects.

The Pipestone Creek Dinosaur Initiative, the group building the museum, says it is at least the fourth act of fossil poaching and vandalism in the region in the last few months.

WHO THE HELL DOES THIS?

Alberta aboriginal rock etchings defaced with drill, power washer, acid (http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/09/18/alberta-aboriginal-rock-etchings-defaced-with-drill-power-washer-acid/)

http://nationalpostnews.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/glenwood_erratic_cdavis8.jpg (http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/09/18/alberta-aboriginal-rock-etchings-defaced-with-drill-power-washer-acid/)

Historians are comparing it to the Taliban’s destruction of massive Buddhist statues in Afghanistan: Ancient aboriginal pictograms and petroglyphs on an Albertan rock formation have been systematically destroyed by cultural vandals using a rock drill, acid and a power washer.

The obliteration of the etchings on the Glenwood Erratic near Pincher Creek in southern Alberta was discovered last week, just as an historian was about to photograph and test the markings.

“The site is part of the earliest heritage of Canada,” said Michael Dawe, Curator of History at Red Deer Museum. “It looks like an ancient ceremonial/religious site at Glenwood, Alta., was deliberately destroyed. If true, this is a shocking and appalling incident.”
