While we are not as hot as the folks in ON (e.g., the GTA, Windsor, et al), and certainly not as hot as spots in the US south and midwest, we have been setting or nearly setting heat records established back in the early to mid-1940s here in St.John's. When we get a 4th straight days of temps, with the humidex, in the low 30C range, that is VERY hot in St.John's. One more hot day is in store for us tomorrow, and then it should be over.

Yeah, it's hot enough. Walking outside after a day in the office, the air hits like a blast furnace. I feel bad for folks in their 80s and 90s.

I recall my days in Georgia, especially Waycross, GA, where it would get up to 100F with nearly 100% humidity .............. and then finally rain. I would go outside and just stand in the warm rain. Neighbors thought I was crazy but it was a blessed relief.

I spent some time near the Mississippi...in Mississippi. I know the weather and humidity of which Dr. G. speaks--and temperatures in the 80s by 8 am.

Better half suffered through the coldest wettest Spring on record. I was further South dealing with temps in the mid 90s (F). Decided that A/C was good and would let the enviro-nuts be the ones to get by without it.

For both of us the current low 20s (C) are a blessed relief.

Yes, I would get up at 6AM just to experience a bit of gentle weather ........ 75F ......... as it got more and more humid and hotter. What would kill me in Waycross, GA, was the lack of wind ........... or even a cooling breeze.

I just watered the flowers and trees and grass, amazing how dry the earth is, I water every day.
Sometimes I just want to pave it all, but when I look at my piece of green heaven I love it.
Ontario is just hot. I wish it would rain. I would stand in it myself and pary to God and say thanks
So Dr. G your not nuts in my book.

I have a huge rain barrel and smaller buckets that I use to store water in May and June for the dry spells we get in July and part of August. I use this to water my wife's flowers, my veggies, and the tree out front. I don't worry much about the lawn and my wife says that we should water the garden more ............. but I don't like to use fresh water for this purpose. What God wants to use for moisture for my lawn is fine with me ................ just so long as it is not snow. :D

Funny you say you don't care about the lawn moisture..Typical Atlantic Canada lawn care.. [ I mean that in a fun way not to be offended. ]
when we go twice a year to PEI.. everyones lawn looks green and kept - but upon closer inspection it is the best kept and trimmed weeds I have ever seen in my life. :lmao:
Atlantic Canadians really do care about the weeds they grow..

Ontario is either hay or turning to weeds. as I water everyday all my vegetation including the grass - I feel it is like the lonesome george turtle - once its gone - its gone..
seems the government is taking a battle against grass, not sure why? - when they use more pesticide in our food than the lawn did..

Will be heading out to PEI soon and look forward to another positive conversation with the Premier like I do every year, LOL [always trying to convince to have ribfest in Charlottetown -told him it will do well. Not mention add a few more garbage cans downtown.. funny thing is they took them away - as the citizens were using it for private usage when the city imposed a new garbage fee so prevent public garbage cans from used by the citizens they took them away.. I find that odd as tourist walking around town look really funny carrying around their trash every where. LOL ] once again mis management which makes the place look bad..
wife thinks i am nuts.. but i say i am logical.. live long and prosper. ;)

I have my dad that will stay over at our place and water ..

Well, I like a nice lawn, and I weed by hand and mow with a push mower, but I don't use fresh water to keep it green. I find that if you cut the grass at just the right height during the dry periods of July (we might go a solid week with absolutely no rain/drizzle/fog), it helps to conserve moisture.

I am into my 3rd week of not mowing to keep the grass long so as to help retain moisture in the lawn. Keeping a lawn long in hot dry weather is the way to go for sure. It makes for a much healthier lawn. Just when you do cut it you have to be careful to not take off too much all at once... not sure if you can adjust the blade height with your push mower or not but with my gas mower I set the height to the highest or second highest level.

I do water my small trees and gardens but never my lawn. In fact it is 75% of rather nice leafy weeds or whatnots that seem more environmental useful than the skinny grass blades. My neighbour across the street is religious with his lawn, like a golf course and no weeds, but, it only delays the inevitable hay look early July.
I have an awesome rechargeable battery powered lawn mower. The battery comes out making it easy to charge it anywhere. I get from my small lawn, front and back about 2 cuts from the battery and I really do overlap a lot when cutting.
Ugh 41°C with humidity tomorrow in Mississauga.

your funny.. are you making funny of me? LOL
i have a WORXS mower I bought when I seen the infomercial one night.. got on my air miles and they had it.. beets the electric one I had with a 100' cord behind it..
I love my battery operated mower..

BTW - i love grass .. I hate weeds.. :ptptptptp LOL
It drives me crazy when I see weeds - buy a condo then.. or interlock it at least..
[ all kidding aside - grass is more environmentally friendly than you think.. it filters more carbon than trees as well cleans rain water before it reaches are taps and prevents erosion ]

I agree, screature. I use the adjustable push mower height to just take off the tops of the grass, and then not to rake it up. This helps also to retain moisture.

Of course, there is someone who collects them:

Vintage Lawn-Boy Mowers - Gas Engines - Gas Engine Magazine (http://gasengine.farmcollector.com/equipment/vintage-lawn-boy-mowers.aspx)

Even better, here's a YouTube video of a 1954 model running. I didn't know there were models powered by Briggs engines!

I don't know what year the model was that was given to us by my father in-law but it wouldn't have been a 1954 more like the 70s and it had a Briggs engine... it finally gave up the ghost in about 2002. Had I decided to put the money into it it probably could still be running.

Flying Lawn Mower - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_3vLmm5tC8&feature=player_detailpage)
It is my nature to take a topic and go off tangent, so here it is, a flying lawn mower,
My friend's dad belonged to a model airplane club and he had a video of a club member's flying lawn mower like the one here. Just hilarious!
35°C but 41 with humidity. There's a possibility the temperature is going to be even higher.
