: Safe updating of apps for older iOS devices?

Just ran into a bit of a problem...

My wife's 1st-generation iPod Touch (still going strong) maxes out at iOS 3.1.3. I hadn't been giving this any thought at all - until now - when checking for updated apps in iTunes, I only now have clued in to the fact that some of the apps are updating beyond the capacity of the device. For example, the AccuWeather app now requires iOS 4.0 or later...

One would think, especially since it's our only device, that iTunes would offer a warning about iOS version conflicts.... or perhaps keep multiple copies of the app if iTunes knows it has devices with differing capabilities...

Hope she wasn't fond of AccuWeather... and I wonder what else has been toasted by my not-so-careful updating?

You can try downgrading the app if you still have the old file, from the trash can or the backup. There are a few articles about it like this CNet article (http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-10345683-233.html).

I have a 2nd generation iPod Touch and have the same issue. I wish there were a better way of updating. It doesn't warn you until you have updated in iTunes and sync. t have to make sure that apps are compatible. Although one of the easiest ways is to check for updates on the device itself as that will give only the appropriate ones.

macfoto: hm. Good idea - doing updates only on the device. Will give it a shot.

Another quirk: The AccuWeather app, which states it's compatible with iOS 4.0+, appears to work fine with iOS 3.1.3. We may run into a bug at some point, but so far it works.... this time.

Refurbished iPod touch, 8GB - Black (current generation) - Apple Store (Canada) (http://store.apple.com/ca/product/FC540C/A).

It's inevitable. And well priced. ;)

That is a nice price :) But - we're going to be an iPad 2 household shortly (a gift from an uncle to our son), which will take the pressure off of the iPod Touch we have somewhat... it may be relegated to my "out of the house" email device, since our city has pretty impressive public square WiFi in the core...
