Same to you, Dr. H. I just got back from a sunrise service (5-7AM) atop Signal Hill here in St.John's to ring in Canada Day for all of Canada. Paix, mon ami.

Happy Canada Day to you all. Once upon a time it was my favorite day on the calendar. I have fond memories of gathering with friends in the Edmonton river valley to watch fireworks and all of us entertaining crowds around us by singing Arrogant Worms songs at the top of our lungs.

I find it a bit strange and sad, but I am the only person on my cul de sac not born in Canada but I am the only person who flies the Canadian flag with pride from dawn until dusk every Canada Day. Still, we live in a free country where many people, regardless of where they were born and raised, choose to fly the Canadian flag, and that is one thing that I like about Canada. Paix, mes amis.

I have often described Canada Day as "The Fourth of July" on Valium. Still I am sure that most Canadians are extremely proud to be Canadian, and love their country every bit as fiercely as Americans love theirs. The difference being they really see no reason to brag on it.

One huge and welcome difference is the lack of the "(Re)Elect Me" speeches that invariably accompany the Birthday celebrations further South.

This might be true, eMacMan. Still, the only two people who have commented about my flying the American flag on the 4th, which I do as well, are Canadians born in central Canada. I just ask them where there Canadian flag was flying on July 1st, and that keeps them quiet.

Still, it is nice to see that there were so many people celebrating Canada Day across this great country of ours, be they born and raised here or Canadians by choice.

Paix, mon ami.

The wimps that run our city set off our fireworks at 8:00 p.m. in full daylight so the "children can see them too". When I was a child, my parents always allowed us to stay up until 11:00 p.m. and made a big deal of it, as did we with our kids. Now society here has destroyed that tradition and do the same silly thing by ringing in the new year with 8:00 p.m. fireworks on December 31.

How does one see or appreciate fireworks at 8PM when the sky is still blue??? As a child, going to Coney Island on July 4th with my parents to see the fireworks was my childhood tradition, so it is the same idea. That was the treat .......... to stay up late and to see the fireworks.

They use the shadow of a hill, but it ruins the effect. Like I said, they are wimps and societal misfits.

Speaking of a hill. The show from Parliament Hill was a huge dissapointment. A bunch of tired z-list acts hauled out by third string presenters who all seemed shot up on speed!

Fieste could have been a bright spot but she was completely lost on the big stage.....

Too bad. It is usually a good show.

Yep same crew out here. Canceled this years fireworks display altogether because CPR asked the town to temporarily fence off the tracks so CPR could keep running their trains. For 20+ years CPR has found ways to work around it. This year they simply found a council too wimpy to say: "Fence your own tracks, or do what you have been doing all along and stop the trains for a few hours."

Well, we had a great day spent the day with friends and family. Fireworks were very well done. When I include the Saturday into the the mix (Canada Day party and parade) it was a fantastic Canada weekend. Also, my mom made it through her cancer surgery, so that made it even better. One note in my mom and dad's neighbourhood the local Remax put Canadian flags on all the lawns. Small town Canada at its best. I did find it disappointing that Brant County let slip the Canada parade and fireworks there. But the display in Innerkipp made up for it.
