Normally I right click and the the "move to trash" option is offered. Suddenly that option is missing, any help appreciated.

Open disk utility and reformat it. I do it that way, so the card doesn't corrupt or fragment over time. Remains nice and quick

If this is a camera memory card I prefer to reformat the card using the camera. This way I get things backed up and the back-up tested before I delete the images.

Why screw with 'PC format' on a Mac when the camera does it for you? A totally unnecessary extra step.

My point was if its already in your computer, might as well - less steps then most cameras.
Open disk utility and click erase - yup that can be complicated.
But it was just an idea / tip no more no less.

I agree with this; the camera knows how it wants a card formatted.

Definitely if it is for a camera the best way to delete the images on it is by reformatting it in the camera, no ifs, ands or buts.

Not necessarily.
Somehow the formatting is different.
I formatted an SD card on the Mac using the PC formatting option - the card that way would only record 10 minutes of video and that was it.
Tried it several times.
Contacted the vendor of the video camera - they suggested formatting using the camera and voila - full recording (to fill up the SD card) was now possible.

On the Mac the formatting still shows up as FAT but obviously something is different somewhere.

Depends on the camera but obviously since the camera expects it to be done the way camera does it, best to let the camera do it.:)

Disk Utility suggestion is a good one (or else you can try a low level formatting tool).
