: Trying to decide what monitor to buy
D37 Jun 26th, 2012, 04:40 PM I'm looking for a 24 inch monitor to connect to my Macbook Pro 2010.
I have a $150 gift certificate to Amazon.ca and am looking to pick one up from there.
Here are the two I am looking at:
a - ASUS VE247H 23.6-Inch 1920x1080 LED Monitor: Amazon.ca: Electronics (http://www.amazon.ca/ASUS-VE247H-23-6-Inch-1920x1080-Monitor/dp/B004EFUOY4/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1340742257&sr=1-1)
b - Viewsonic VX2453MH-LED 24-Inch Ultra-thin Widescreen LED Monitor - Black: Amazon.ca: Electronics (http://www.amazon.ca/Viewsonic-VX2453MH-LED-24-Inch-Ultra-thin-Widescreen/dp/B004LXK8LI/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1340742257&sr=1-3)
Which would you guys recommend from the above two or is there a better one on amazon? (here are the 24inch monitors on amazon: Amazon.ca: 24 inch monitor: Electronics (http://www.amazon.ca/s/ref=sr_nr_i_0?rh=k%3A24+inch+monitor%2Ci%3Aelectro nics&keywords=24+inch+monitor&ie=UTF8&qid=1340742245#/ref=sr_st?keywords=24+inch+monitor&qid=1340742248&rh=k%3A24+inch+monitor%2Cn%3A667823011&sort=pmrank))
Joker Eh Jun 26th, 2012, 05:37 PM You want this one ASUS PA246Q 24-Inch LCD Monitor
ASUS PA246Q 24-Inch LCD Monitor (Black): Amazon.ca: Electronics (http://www.amazon.ca/ASUS-PA246Q-24-Inch-Monitor-Black/dp/B004NBZ994/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1340746584&sr=1-5)
D37 Jun 26th, 2012, 05:46 PM Thanks, though I would like to keep it in the price range of about $200.
dona83 Jun 26th, 2012, 06:01 PM $189 for an LG 23" IPS display for superior viewing angles.
Two different models, neither have DisplayPort though...
This one can pivot but doesn't have HDMI, VGA and DVI only.
LG IPS231P 23IN Widescreen LED Backlit LCD Monitor IPS 1920X1080 5MS 5000000:1 HAS Pivot VGA DVI - LG Electronics - IPS231P-BN (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=59771&vpn=IPS231P-BN&manufacture=LG%20Electronics)
This one can't but has HDMI as well as VGA and DVI.
LG IPS236V 23IN Widescreen LED Backlit LCD Monitor IPS 1920X1080 5ms 5000000:1 VGA DVI HDMI - LG Electronics - IPS236V-PN (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=59770&vpn=IPS236V-PN&manufacture=LG%20Electronics)
If you can spring for $260, this one has DisplayPort, pivot, AND HDMI as well as DVI and VGA.
ASUS PA238QR 23IN Widescreen LED Backlit IPS LCD Monitor 1920X1080 6MS 50M:1 HDMI DisplayPort HAS - ASUS - PA238QR (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=69432&vpn=PA238QR&manufacture=ASUS)
D37 Jun 26th, 2012, 06:05 PM Thanks. Is it better to connect the mini display port on my mac to a HDMI or DVI input on the monitor?
Also I haven't heard of "IPS" monitor before.
dona83 Jun 26th, 2012, 06:09 PM Without DisplayPort on a monitor, you'll have to buy an adapter ideally to DVI unless you have one already.
You notice on your MacBook Pro if you change the angle you view your screen at, you lose brightness and colour? That doesn't happen with an IPS display. All the current iMacs, the Thunderbolt Display, and the MacBook Pro with Retina Display use IPS screens, as well as all iPads ever made and iPhone 4 and up.
D37 Jun 26th, 2012, 06:12 PM Thanks. How come to DVI though and not to HDMI? (I see this displayport to HDMI: Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support - Apple Store (Canada) (http://store.apple.com/ca/product/H1824ZM/A/Moshi_Mini_DisplayPort_to_HDMI_Adapter))
Ah IPS is awesome then!
I have to buy from Amazon.ca though... so I'll have to find one on their or just settle with a non-IPS screen.
dona83 Jun 26th, 2012, 06:17 PM HDMI is also good, it's essentially a DVI with a different connector, although it can only support up to 1920x1200, which is what these 23" monitors usually are.
And, tada. $204, free shipping.
LG IPS236V 23" 1080p HDMI Widescreen LED Monitor: Amazon.ca: Electronics (http://www.amazon.ca/IPS236V-1080p-HDMI-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/B004SUDU9Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340748884&sr=8-1)
D37 Jun 26th, 2012, 06:21 PM Ah much appreciated for finding that :) I wonder why they made it as a 23inch and not 24inch.
I had been contemplating between getting a 24inch or a 27inch before, but a friend said that he used to get headaches with his 27inch monitor and is why I'm looking at buying a 24inch.
D37 Jul 8th, 2012, 09:24 PM So I ended up purchasing this monitor: Viewsonic VX2453MH-LED 24-Inch Ultra-thin Widescreen LED Monitor - Black: Amazon.ca: Electronics (http://www.amazon.ca/Viewsonic-VX2453MH-LED-24-Inch-Ultra-thin-Widescreen/dp/B004LXK8LI/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1340742257&sr=1-3)
I already received it and it's hooked up to my MBP right now.
I'm not sure I like it. I feel that the image on it is a bit grainy and the text could be MUCH more crisp. I have changes the settings on it from AV to PC and made sure the monitor is set to 1080p through my Mac. Maybe it's just me... I'm thinking about returning it and going with that LG IPS monitor you recommended (LG IPS236V 23" 1080p HDMI Widescreen LED Monitor: Amazon.ca: Electronics (http://www.amazon.ca/IPS236V-1080p-HDMI-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/B004SUDU9Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340748884&sr=8-1))
Why isn't the monitor displaying text as crisp as I thought it would? (Maybe it's the resolution?)
wonderings Jul 8th, 2012, 10:13 PM How are you connected? mini display port to HDMI? or to DVI? You are not going through VGA are you?
pm-r Jul 9th, 2012, 02:14 PM There are some recent posts in a different thread here who experienced the same problem when using an HDMI cable and if I recall, got it improved by using a DVI-HDMI adapter or cable.
So maybe it's just the cables and display settings that need changing.

That was probably my thread. Just using a HDMI connection brought terrible results, but using a HDMI to DVI connection made it right. I would try just getting a DVI cable and give that a go, if you are not doing that already.
pm-r Jul 9th, 2012, 03:01 PM Yup, I guess that was your comments. ;)
It seems strange that some of the new "standards" just don't seem to work correctly. :(
D37 Jul 9th, 2012, 06:11 PM How are you connected? mini display port to HDMI? or to DVI? You are not going through VGA are you?
It's connected by mini display port to HDMI. After reading more reviews on the monitor people are saying that they got better text clarity by connecting through mini display port to VGA....

Overall I'm looking for a monitor 24inch monitor that has crisp text. I want something around $200 and it has to be from Amazon.ca - here are the best selling monitors from there: Amazon.ca Bestsellers: The most popular items in Computer Monitors (http://www.amazon.ca/Bestsellers-Electronics-Computer-Monitors/zgbs/electronics/677246011/ref=zg_bs_nav_ce_2_2404990011)
Which would you guys go for? ...I'm still looking at that IPS LG monitor for about $200.
Others I'm looking at:
- ASUS VH238H 23-Inch Full-HD LED Monitor with Integrated Speakers: Amazon.ca: Electronics (http://www.amazon.ca/ASUS-VH238H-23-Inch-Integrated-Speakers/dp/B004J6BIJ8/ref=zg_bs_677246011_2)

D37 Jul 10th, 2012, 12:11 AM There is also this IPS LG monitor: 23 Inch Class Ips Panel and Led Backlight (23 Inch Diagonal) 16:9, Fullhd, 50,0: Amazon.ca: Electronics (http://www.amazon.ca/Inch-Class-Panel-Backlight-Diagonal/dp/B004KM4AQY/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1341893435&sr=8-1-fkmr0) <----- This one looks VERY GOOD... I also found a comment on that monitor that said:
I purchased and tested a Viewsonic VX2453MH for one week and returned it because of poor washed out colors and low sharpness on text. I tried fiddling about with all the color & contrast settings and even used settings recommended by someone on Amazon who had calibrated it. I replaced it with the LG IPS 231P-BN and am very happy with the colors and sharpness of text. I am using a $7 HDMI to DVI-D adapter and driving the monitor off my Dell XPS-15 Lap top fitted with a 1 GB Nvidia card. The colors are vibrant, bright, natural and text is very sharp. The monitor worked perfectly out of the box without the need for any adjustments.
I highly recommend this monitor. (Amazon.com: EKSATH WEEREKOON "Audiophilic Engineer"'s review of LG IPS231P-BN 23-Inch Widescreen LED LCD P... (http://www.amazon.com/review/R1G6A643482Y55/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B004KM4AQY&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=))
... I currently have the Viewsonic VX2453MH and am having the same low text sharpness issue...
krs Jul 10th, 2012, 07:05 AM So I ended up purchasing this monitor: Viewsonic VX2453MH-LED 24-Inch Ultra-thin Widescreen LED Monitor - Black: Amazon.ca: Electronics (http://www.amazon.ca/Viewsonic-VX2453MH-LED-24-Inch-Ultra-thin-Widescreen/dp/B004LXK8LI/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1340742257&sr=1-3)
This is really a "23-inch" monitor, calling it a 24-inch monitor I find is misleading.
The big difference between 23-inch and 24-inch monitors is the aspect ratio.
A 23-inch monitor is typically 1920 x 1080 pixels, an aspect ratio and resolution specifically aimed at customers whose primary use of the monitor is watching movies.
For computer work, the 24-inch monitor is preferred, it has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 - one gets that additional screen real estate at the bottom.
Trouble is that the 23-inch "movie" screens are manufactured in huge volumes compared to the 24-inch screens so that 23-inch monitors are much cheaper than an equivalent 24-inch monitor.
I ended up with a few 23-inch IPS monitors for $169.- when Dell hasd their "Dell Day"sales plus a coupon. Great monitors, excellent screem, very flexible stand which also rotates and a built in four port USB hub. I use the DVI connectionwhich gives the best picture quality and nice crisp text.
But if you need to buy from Amazon, Dell is not an option.
krs Jul 10th, 2012, 07:20 AM If you search on Amazon.ca for a 24-inch IPS monitor, none come up anywhere close to your price target.
The cheapest one is over $600.-
Same search for a 23-inch IPS monitor brings up only one in the $200 price bracket:
23 Inch Class Ips Panel and Led Backlight (23 Inch Diagonal) 16:9, Fullhd, 50,0: Amazon.ca: Electronics (http://www.amazon.ca/Inch-Class-Panel-Backlight-Diagonal/dp/B004KM4AQY/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1341918739&sr=1-1)

Looking at that model I see that it has "DVI-D" connection. Would a regular mini displayport to DVI work just fine with the monitor?
Thanks
jowyum Jul 30th, 2012, 03:16 PM hmm thanks, im def not going with viewsonic for my purchase
