Yes, my daughter and her friends had the privilege of meeting Sir Lonesome George (and his large, bored harem) in the Spring of 2011 when their school traveled to The Galapagos to volunteer on a conservation and rehabilitation project.
They spent a few days learning about his significance and the organization's struggle to keep his sub-species alive. The whole school group is devastated at the news.

Sad indeed, especially after having actually seen him and his habitat. :-(

Lots of George stories circulating today. I guess he slept a great deal and had a fondness for celery sticks.

I am amazed at how long his neck was and how gentle he was to his handler.

It is very sad indeed and he was such a young guy relatively speaking with the species capable of living up to 200 years old and he was only around 100, he was just middle aged. :-(

True ............. and the last of his kind. He was like Ishi, who was the last member of the Yahi, the last surviving group of the Yana people of the U.S.
