: Apple Told Him The iTouch is Toast
mgmitchell Jun 24th, 2012, 09:39 PM One of my G8 female students got in the middle of some "mean girl" stuff last week, and her mother was in to see me, loaded for bear. The story was that another girl took her daughter's iTouch (sorry, don't know which generation), dinked around with it, tried to crack the password - without success. The girl knew it anyway, that if she tried enough times, she'd lock it and render it useless. That's what happened. The owner couldn't get back in. Her older brother, who fancied himself as an Apple specialist, insisted that the device was torched, that he called Apple and was told that it was junk because of the locked password issue. Can't be fixed, essentially. The mother - and me - found it hard to believe that Apple would make a $400 device that, after a bunch of unsuccessful password hits, would be toast. Completely unusable. Shouldn't she be able to go into an Apple store and get this resolved?
Thanks for any advice.

NFtoBC Jun 24th, 2012, 10:03 PM Google "how to reset a disabled iPod touch" and see if solutions can be found for the particular iPod Touch you have. Most solutions seem to require reconnecting to the computer the Touch was last synced to. Hopefully it was synced.....
Dr_AL Jun 24th, 2012, 10:06 PM In an absolute worst case scenario the iPod touch could be put into restore mode and then restored through iTunes.
The iPod is definitely not garbage.

mgmitchell Jun 25th, 2012, 09:50 PM Great help, here. Thanks. Had the police in this morning, and we BOTH thought it couldn't possibly be useless. I'll show the girl tomorrow these replies, thanks.

Overreaction much?

We don't know what else went on with the Jr High School "Mean Girl" situation beyond what the OP asked about the iPod on this forum. Nor do we know the school policies in such incidents. It is quite likely much more happened than the theft & eventual return of the Apple device.
G-Mo Jun 25th, 2012, 10:36 PM I think the bottom line here is, there is no such product as the iTouch.
rgray Jun 25th, 2012, 11:30 PM Overreaction much?
Not really. It behooves law abiding and right behaving people to fight back more than they usually do. If this means police involment, that is what they are for. They don't want us taking matters into our own hands so I say call them in each and every time.

You know, I thought it was quite a mouthful when they first came out, but it now it just rolls off the tongue like fresh Dasani.
rondini Jun 26th, 2012, 11:24 AM funny, but everyone knew which product she meant! In spite of the naming error.
Would have thought the Mayor would have stayed out of it!
Stay classy. Nitpickers.
mgmitchell Jun 27th, 2012, 04:20 PM Hmm, 'rondini', I'm a "he", by the way.
Yes, a bit over the top with the iPod thing. I call it a "Touch". Sue me.
The police. There were serious threats made on school property, a sweater was also stolen, AND the you-know-what stolen and "damaged". This young lady is a repeat offender. No, I don't call the police at every instant.
Anyway, I think the young lady with the locked YKW is SOOL. When I showed her these tips, she lamented that the computer she has it synced to is in Alberta with her other brother from another mother. I believe it has to be restored on the "home" computer, yes?
rondini Jun 27th, 2012, 07:54 PM Not sure about the restore part. Perhaps if it was 'deleted' from the other computer? I would talk to a tech at an Apple store if one is nearby. Or phone apple direct. they are pretty good on the phone about stuff.
DR Hannon Jun 28th, 2012, 05:07 AM It should be able to be restored on any computer.
mgmitchell Jun 28th, 2012, 06:36 AM Thanks for all your advice.
/M.
PosterBoy Jun 28th, 2012, 10:36 PM Yeah, just plug it into iTunes and you should be able to resurrect it. Worse case scenario the data is wiped.
mgmitchell Jun 29th, 2012, 01:49 PM Okay, she brought in the iPod Touch, and we can't even open the device because it says "iPod is disabled". Can't use the passcode to even get INTO the device. Now what?
/M.
CubaMark Jun 29th, 2012, 01:54 PM mgmitchell, the instructions in the video I posted above *should* allow you to get past that message...
mgmitchell Jun 29th, 2012, 09:12 PM WORKED! CubaMark, thanks a bunch. It took about 7-8 tries, but it finally restored. I think once I waited until the software downloaded fully, it was fine. A couple of times, the iPod crapped out and reverted to that "disabled" screen - and I mistakenly unplugged before the software was downloaded. Just a short time ago, it crapped out again, but I allowed the software to download. I then re-traced your steps, and the iPod engaged with the restore because the software was there "somewhere".
The student (and mother) will be thrilled when I hand it back next week.
Thanks again. Amazing knowledge on this forum. Never fails to deliver a solution.
/Michael.

Au contrair mes amis!
It's made by Apple hence the "i" and you touch it to make it work hence the "iTouch" voila!

LOL, you obviously don't live in Montreal. You couldn't get the cops here to come by your house in under three hours if you called 911 and told them a bunch of wild men where robbing your house and raping your family!
Good for you if your local/provincial police actually intervene when crime occurs!

Excellent. Now go look for that product name on Apple's support page. Go ahead, take your time. I'll wait. Let me know when you find it.

If your childs $400 bike was stolen, wouldn't you contact the cops?
John Clay Jul 5th, 2012, 02:09 PM If your childs $400 bike was stolen, wouldn't you contact the cops?
Nope. Chances of getting a stolen bike back are almost nil, and the cops have better things to do.
mgmitchell Jul 6th, 2012, 11:04 PM Before this thread went to hell, I was actually thanking 'CubaMark' for solving my restore problem. So I'll thank him again, and perhaps we'll put this to rest.

CubaMark Jul 7th, 2012, 12:53 AM Glad it worked out for you, mgmitchell - as for thread derailments, well, that's part of the charm of ehMac.... ;)
