I saw a lot of Apple-ness in this presentation: word usage, the video of the team behind the scenes, the chair and table on stage, the product itself.

The biggest "rip-off" is the magnetic attachment of the cover/keyboard. I mean, it's identical to Apple's Smart Cover. I don't really see the table as a huge rip-off because everyone is making tablets like the iPad. But the magnetic attachment cover is just so blatant and they presented it just like Steve Jobs presented the Smart Cover - talking about the magnets keeping it in place and ensuring a perfect connection every time.

In the end, it looks like a decent tablet. Heavier than the iPad with much less screen resolution and a strange combo-OS, but nicer than a lot of the tablets out there. The big mistake is having two models and naming them the typical Microsoft way - cryptic and confusing instead of simple and easy to understand. I honestly think Microsoft and it's fanboys think complicated names are cool.

Why not just have the Surface and the Surface Pro? One is a tablet to compete directly with iPad/Android and the other is a laptop/PC replacement with better innards. Simple. But no. Surface for Windows RT and Surface for Windows 8 Pro. Drop the extra bits. Simplify!

Well, they were following Steve Jobs' script well until that moment. :D

The other difference is one is actually selling. Hell the iPad 4 might be out when this one goes on sale.

... can you apply the term 'plagarism' to a video production? That's what came to mind when I watched the video.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Apple should be beet red from blushing now.

I liked the Surface better the first time it came out when it referred to a $10,000 electronic coffee table. And at least it was original. Can't wait to see how they update the Sphere next.

I watched the release, it was pretty terrible. I think they need to give some public speaking lessons to those presenters, it was pretty bad. Especially when the Surface failed and they need to swap, you can tell he was shaken, then just got back into the script. I don't think the product failing was that big of deal, it happens, and has happened to Apple in the past.

I dont put a lot of faith in a product though that they spend almost an hour going over how great the stand or the case is, 2x, rather then what the product can do itself. I dont care if the stand is made just like a fine car. The case while a copy, is at least innovative by adding a keyboard to it, really good idea though there is no way it will be like typing on a real keyboard.

One of my neighbors saw the Surface on tv and told me it was better than an iPad because it comes with a stylus.

Lmao!! And I suppose a Fiat 500 with alloy rims is better than a Dodge Charger with steel wheels?

Seems like all they talked about was additions to Surface, not how the device itself actually did, or what features they brought to the table.

Think maybe there's a reason they didn't give the press very much hands-on time with it? By the time this beast comes out, Apple could have its own keyboard cover as well. I'm pretty certain that the accessories like the keyboard cover are going to cost plenty extra over and above whatever the actual Surface price is going to be. We shall see, as Dr. G likes to say.

If Apple does come out with a keyboard cover that is similar, this would be reversal of the Microsoft copying Apple line. I think the keyboard cover is a really good idea and does not add a lot to the overall size of the device.

Certainly—as long as it works. I have a feeling that this particular piece is more cool concept than working protoype, which is why they didn't really let anyone try it out. It COULD be a great differentiating factor, but then again, if you really require a keyboard, why exactly do you need a touchscreen tablet? Apple's had a separate iPad keyboard since the start that doubles as a dock, but I know my kids have just learned to type on the touchscreen for the most part because it's less cumbersome that way.

The Fiat 500 IS better, but not because of the wheels.

I don't know if this'll pay off or not for Microsoft. It's hard to gauge how successful it'll be until it gets released. My office has a couple of Windows 7 based tablets right now and they suck. If Microsoft still can't get on screen typing right, it'll still suck. People buy tablets instead of laptops because they may not have the luxury of a surface to rest the machine on. iPad has a great on screen keyboard. Everyone I know who has one loves it.

The Windows 8 Version (not the RT) will run normal applications. That may be a game changer. I don't know how many times I've been asked about running Simply accounting, quickbooks, outlook, etc. on a tablet.

We shall see how well though. But potential for sure.

Interesting about the Atom processor. Especially if you've read Isaacson's Biography about Jobs with Jobs wanting the Atom processor in the ipad, and admitting it wouldn't have worked..

Guess Microsoft didn't read it.

At this point MS can claim anything they want about multitasking and what apps will run and so on, since no one can disprove it. For all intents and purposes, the Surface is still vapourware and will be until about Christmastime.

Oprah hasn’t been shy about her love for the MS Surface. In early November, she claimed that it was one of her favorite things. This morning, she tweeted that she has bought 12 for Christmas gifts. She sent that using Twitter for iPad.

The Surface is on Oprah Winfrey’s list of 48 favorite things,

I think it's sad that people have to make fun of a truly great product like the Surface because they feel insecure, jealous or just plain elitist about a product they prefer.

You mean like the way they made fun of the iPad before it started selling gangbusters, comparing it to a feminine hygiene product, for example? Yeah, I hate it when that happens.

I for one had serious "buyer's remorse" when I got my first iPad.

Then I took it out of the box......................

I never said it was ok to make fun of the iPad either. Do you really believe "an eye for an eye" is a valid point? Does vengeance make you feel better about those who made fun of the iPad?

Could you point me to a review with that conclusion. Just one will do.

Easy.

Engadget: Microsoft Surface with Windows RT review (http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/23/microsoft-surface-rt-review/)
"The Microsoft Surface with Windows RT's $499 starting MSRP means those thinking about making the investment here will be carefully cross-shopping against same-priced offerings from Apple, ASUS and others. Where does this one rate? Very well." "If you're looking for an impeccably engineered tablet upon which you can do some serious work, a device that doesn't look, feel or act like a toy, then you should get yourself a Surface with Windows RT."

How about Walt Mossberg? The notorious Apple-lover says: "I have been testing the Surface almost daily for three weeks and I like it. It’s beautifully and solidly built and it’s the purest expression of Microsoft’s new Windows 8 touchscreen operating system... This isn’t a cheap iPad knockoff. It’s a unique tablet, made of a type of magnesium with a feeling of quality and care."

All other reviews saying the Surface is "disappointing" are doing so mainly because of lack of apps (which will obviously grow... it's still new) and the difficulty in using the keyboard (at least it has a keyboard). The original iPhone didn't have any apps. The iPad launched with only a handful of native apps. Give it time.

More importantly, my own review is the only one that matters to me. The Surface is a great product, and being close-minded to anything "non-Apple" just makes you look like a "me too" sheep incapable of deciding for yourself what is good or not. I like the Surface, yet I'm not on here (or anywhere) saying how awful the iPad is. They both have flaws, and they both have strengths. Bringing others down does not make you any better.

So there you go. I hope the Surface does well>OK simply because it's the first to not be simply an iPad knockoff. But you have to have a thick skin in this industry. The bigger competition for the Surface, believe it or not, will come from the iPad Mini, which can do more and be easier to carry or fit in a purse. For the first time, an Apple product, one with some design track history, will cost substantially LESS than its MS Windows counterpart.
