: Can you get a data plan for less than 3 years?

I'm with Rogers and my 3-year data plan is up next month. (Because I upgraded to an iPhone 4 last year, my cellular plan isn't up until 2014, but that's another issue). I don't want to re-sign to a 3 year contract for data because I don't know where I'll be come next fall - I might be moving to the US for school, although that remains to be seen at the moment. So my question is, is there a way to get a data plan for one year? I don't care if it's with Rogers or not. It just makes no sense for me to agree to a 3 year plan, move away, and end up with a huge cancellation fee. Or if it was with Rogers, has anyone heard of them agreeing to a 1 year contract?

Once the contract expires, you will be on a month to month data plan.

Oh, I didn't know that. Any idea how much they charge? I'm only at 500mb/month.

Your rate should stay the same.

Awesome, I was worried about that. Thank you!

It's worth noting that if you had term discounts applied, those may disappear.

For instance, I have 2 recurring discounts ($10 each) that expire after 3 years. To get them back, I have to sign a new contract.

I have the 6GB data plan and Rogers won’t let me change anything to my plan without signing again for 3 years. I even talked to the higher up CSR people and they wouldn’t budge. If you want to keep the 6GB plan and change anything they’ll get you to sign another 3 year deal (which sucks because I bought my iPhone 4 unlocked from apple)

I went through the same thing with my corporate reps... 6GB plans require a contract (unless you had ridden your term out and are "grandfathered" into a month to month contract). I was looking at a month to month contract because i own my iPhone, and they wouldn't budge even an inch on it since i was a "new" customer.

Irony of all ironies is that if i were to sign up on a contract with my own device and a month later my phone breaks i am still responsible for the duration of the contract, i would not be eligable to buy a new device from Rogers at the subsidized cost. If i wanted to do that i would have to cancel out my contract (with fee) then sign up for a new contract. They told me "the contract isn't just about paying off the phone, its about a commitment to three years of data usage that you would be breaking..." Needless to say i am on a month to month contract with 1.5GB of data, and that's treating me just fine :)
