I can get a refurb ATV1 for $80 from Best Buy in the Sates. Or should I get a refurb ATV3? With the jailbreak not available for the 3 I am kinda leaning towards the 1. But is there lots of features I would be missing? I really want to stream the content that I have on my iMac without converting it into iTunes. And I can't find an ATV2 anywhere for a decent price since people seem to think that jailbreaking it is worth $200! lol

not sure about all the missing features but I have a Apple TV 3 and also want to stream movies from my laptop to the TV via the ATV without using iTunes. What worked for me was installing AirParrot (http://airparrot.com/) on my MacBook Pro and sending the content wirelessly to the ATV. No jail breaking required. At this time, it's the best solution I could find for my needs. Hopefully soon, someone will offer a way to jailbreak the new ATV.

The only thing that the AppleTV 1 did that the AppleTV 2 and 3 don't that I miss at all is iTunes Extras from my movie purchases.

Personally i think there are huge differences between the Apple TV1 and 2/3. It all comes down to your needs/wants. I actually have both a 1 and 2, and they serve different purposes for me.

Biggest advantage of the Apple TV1 is the the hard drive. Its loaded with my sons movies (Thomas, Yo Gabba Gabba, Wiggles etc...) so if we are going to the cottage or Grandmas house for a couple of days it gets packed in the car rather then bringing a bag of DVD's. Yes i have that content in iTunes, but with FireCore its also open to play any content.

Apple TV2 is in the living room upstairs where my son and wife spend most of the time. Small profile, hidden behind the TV. It streams from the same library as the ATV1 (his shows), but is also really nice to just stream via AirPlay a video/clip from an iOS device (movie trailer, youtube etc) on the fly to it.

They both will act as "Airtunes" speakers so i can play something off of itunes and broadcast it out of both devices for whole house, which is nice.
