Haven't used it yet, I'll wait for the final release which'll hopefully actually work. :)

I think it pretty harsh to do that, forcing everyone to buy the new os and possibly new hardware.
They are living up to the 84 commercial ethier fall inline or else LOL

It was always a time-limited beta. If people didn't think they'd follow through, then that's their problem.

I had only used the Messages beta for a few days, but had to dump it and go back to iChat. It was incompatible (at least for me) with my folks' version of iChat on their old G4 Lampshade iMac.

When I move up to Mountain Lion next month, not sure what we'll do about that little issue... hopefully Apple's engineers have squashed that bug.

I've been using it ever since the release. Works great and would really miss it if it dies. Why would Apple not leave it intact until, say two weeks after the release of Mountain Lion and then disable it for anyone still using Lion? Or is that too much for Apple to grasp?

It has been great. My daughter has been on a teaching exchange at a university in Wales. And it has been very useful in keeping in touch with her.

I have to say I really don't get some of the directions Apple is taking of late. In particular I am not interested in Mountain Lion and iOS6 being "tightly integrated with Facebook".....

Time to take a look at Linux again. Began way back with Unix anyway. It'd be just going back to my roots. :D

If you don't want Facebook integration, don't change your settings to integrate with Facebook.

Messages for Mac is an inconsistent dog of an app (no ill will to consistent dogs). Any improvement would be welcome.

Or better yet, just leave it the F alone. My computers are just old enough to not be able to use Mountain Lion, so it seems kind of mean-spirited to remove something that is working from my POV.

mine still seems to be working. it'll be irritating if they shut me off before i can get on mountain lion. i have grown quite attached to it, even with its foibles (consistent issues with a message read on computer showing as "unread" on my phone/pad until i figure out which message it is and continue the convo with that contact)

If you're in Lion now, you'll like Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is to Lion what Snow Leopard was to Leopard - an improved version that really isn't that radically different.

As someone using DP4, I would 100% agree with this.

Messages is just a dog, like others have said. I've had it open up and be completely blank etc... just like in the OP. It's not Apple locking people out, it's just a beta program that's a POS, IMHO.

A restart of the computer once the list has been cleared sometimes helps. As does uninstalling the program and reinstalling. This has nothing to do with Apple locking people out - though I bet they'll start doing that at some point... Or maybe charge $0.99 for Messages on the App store for Lion customers.

Messages definitely works better in Mountain Lion...

I had issues with it right off the bat, but for the past couple months has been flawless. I hope they let us keep it until ML comes out.

I really like it, never had an issue with it...

Not sure why they just wouldn't leave it as is and have it be offically "un-supported in lion" sams as they did with Bootcamp in Tiger. It was a limtied time release, but never really expired or stopped working once they pulled the available download plug... Just don't look for help if you had issues with it :)

Reading the linked post.. I've had this happen a few times - usually there's some daemon getting stuck in the background which I've had to manually kill, then restart Messages, and everything was fine. I'm not sure that's Apple forcibly disabling it... At least not yet.
