Hey amigos,

For those who've been *ahem* perturbed by the removal of Save As.... it's coming back in Mountain Lion (but it's a hidden feature).

Apple Quietly Brings ‘Save As’ Back in Mountain Lion (http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/apple_quietly_brings_save_as_back_in_mountain_lion/)

I don't have any problem using "Save As..." with my Mac OS. ;)

Oh right, I keep forgetting that I'm normally using SL 10.6.8 where everything that I need just works as I expect and want thanks. ;)

The keyboard shortcut used to be command-s, now it's command-option-shift-S and no menu item....

I wouldn't exactly call that "brought back"

I know quite a few people happy to get save as back, no matter what the command is

It just doesn't make any sense to me that Apple would change the short cut command, is there any reason for that?

We have a number of Macs in the family, every one typically has a desk top and a lap top.
We try to keep them all on the same OS but that is not always possible.
It's just going to be rather confusing having to use different keyboard short cuts on different Macs.

I found consistency of commands and file menus to be one of the strength of the Mac compared to Windows. That seems to become a thing of the past.

Years ago, I remember Windows MS Office changing the location of the print command for every new version we got in the office - frustrating.

Question for you. I am currently running 10.6.8 and have been thinking about mountain lion when it comes out. Will I be able to load it directly.

Yes. Via the Mac App Store, you can skip 10.7.

You can also hold option and click on the "File" menu.

That is good to know.

Everything I had read so far about 'Save As...' on Mountain Lion stated that this feature was only available as a keyboard shortcut.

More reason not to upgrade if you are working pro with Adobe CS pre 5 or even sometimes even CS5 depending on the program...

command-s was always the shortcut for just plan old 'save'. To the best of my knowledge 'save as' is a way of saving a copy of a file - for example, opening a document (say a letter or resume you worked on previously), doing stuff to it and, instead of losing the one your first opened, you hit 'save as' and give it a new name, keep the original AND keep the changes by 'saving as' a different name which leaves you with two files rather than one.

With command-s you can, as far as I know, still save stuff but that will automatically write over what you originally opened - unless I'm missing something.

SAVE AS used to be Shift Command S. you have to hold down an extra key now. Don't strain your hand... ;)

And another thing they're fixing in Mountain Lion, which will make some of you very happy, I suspect:

OS X Mountain Lion to fix full screen support on multiple displays (http://www.thegraphicmac.com/os-x-mountain-lion-to-fix-full-screen-support-on-multiple-displays)

Currently, if you have more than one display and you enter full screen mode, your secondary display is rendered completely useless. With Mountain Lion, you’ll be able to have enter full screen mode on one display and still use the secondary display for other tasks.

But this way they can sell it as a "new feature" of Mointain Lion ;)

I wonder if this will allow a feature that I love in windows when running powerpoint on multiple monitors. In Windows I can have a live powerpoint presentation on screen 2, while on screen one I can edit the powerpoint on the fly (not presenter mode) or just do other things.

Sadly, this isn't in the latest developer preview. Hopefully soon.

Does anyone know if Lion has issues with auto login/bluetooth?
i.e. with autologin selected and a bluetooth keyboard & mouse, I often
am asked for my password!

You are missing the point!!!

The problem is not having to hold down an extra key but the fact that Apple is changing both the key commands and the access under the file menu for an option that has been on the Mac for as long as I can remember and that for no valid reason - at least none that I can see and when I asked that question earlier in this thread specifically, nobody else piped up with one.

Why couldn't they just put "Save As...." back into the 'File' pull down menu like on 10.6 and every release of Mac software earlier and use the standard keyboard shortcut?

+1.

And what ever happened to the old "Mac OS X Human Interface Guidelines" manual that it seems the latest Mac developers may not have even read or or even digested if they did.

Even Apple's own developer guidelines refers to it at one of their developer sites:
https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/userexperience/Conceptual/AppleHIGuidelines/Intro/Intro.html

"Mac OS X Human Interface Guidelines describes the characteristics of the OS X platform and the guidelines and principles that help you design an outstanding user interface and user experience for your Mac app. ..."

So why change something that has worked for years that their latest Lion changes have made so many things confusing to many, including even new Mac Lion users?

Because that would mean Apple would be admitting they were wrong. Apple is NEVER wrong. EVER.

I still hate Lion, but I've been forced to learn to live with it; I expect the same with Mountain Goat. I sincerely miss Snow Leopard, by far the best OS Apple ever released. Sadly, we'll never see anything like it again.

I'm glad you posted the link, pm-r.

Who at Apple to I complaint to now that Steve Jobs is gone?

Removing the "Save As" option in Lion was dumb enough, putting it back differently is asinine.

I have two of my family's Macs running on Lion, I only used Lion a little bit before I handed over the new Macs to two different family members and after adjusting the scrolling method and setting up mail in the SL way, I haven't heard any major complaints.
WiFi reception is worse on Lion that SL, but that could also be the different hardware,

Sort of hard sometimes to compare Lion ons SL; the Lion Macs are faster simply because the hardware is faster, everyone obviously likes that and that offsets some of the negative points.

The Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade was really nice, great improvement, very noticeable.
I'm hoping that Lion to Mountain Lion will be something similar.

I have high hopes for Mountain Lion I like some of the features coming. Thanks for linking to that compatibility chart to. I can only assume some of those companies are working on updates as I write this.
