: Wanted To Buy Lampshade iMac
kloan Jun 12th, 2012, 02:44 AM My friend had a 17" Lampshade iMac he was going to give me, but I couldn't think of a use for it... until I got home and realized that I could have used it to stream to my living room stereo from my other iMac's iTunes library (it's in my bedroom), which I've been wanting to do for months now (stereo has a USB input which sounds WAY better than the aux input that I use with my iPod Touch).
Anyway, he ended up giving it to someone else.
So...... if anyone has one they don't feel like holding onto anymore.... PM me! :)
PS: I'm not really looking to spend much money on one.....
CubaMark Jun 12th, 2012, 01:51 PM My folks have been using a 17" Lampshade for the past couple of years as their first computer. Web, Skype, iChat, email... they're quite happy with it (not that they had any great expectations). Only downside is lack of an iChat camera, so their grandson down here in Mexico can't seem them in video (though they can see him).
Love this model of iMac. Would like to score a 20" model someday...
kloan Jun 12th, 2012, 02:32 PM They're a really nice design. I could pick up a G5 for dirt cheap, but I prefer the look of the lampshade a lot more.
Rob Jun 12th, 2012, 05:41 PM The lampshades are great!
I've got one that I use in the kitchen. I got my parent's one to use as a second computer when one of them is on the G5. My girlfriend uses one as her primary computer, but she's still on dialup so isn't fussy about speed.
Be careful about USB however. I think only the last versions have USB2. Most of them only have USB1. This may or may not be a concern, depending on what you're doing with it.
G4s now perform poorly with YouTube videos too, but for the run of the mill stuff they work just fine.

CubaMark,
I got my mom set up for video conferencing via iChat with a KROSS Optia Webcam with Mic. It was $15 in Toronto, and supports Macs without drivers. It just clips on your monitor.
I can't remember all the details, but I think you had to sign up for AIM Messenger (Free), and use it through iChat. Worked fine with a G5, so it should work with a lampshade if it has USB2. Might be iffy if it has USB1 though.
CubaMark Jun 12th, 2012, 08:08 PM Thanks, Rob - I'll check into that. Cheers!
ahMEmon Jun 13th, 2012, 10:18 AM I have a lampshade 15" lampshade iMac that I want to get rid of.
G4 700Mhz, not sure of the ram though, maybe 256 megs.
Yours for the taking if you can come to Ajax to get it!
kloan Jun 13th, 2012, 07:05 PM actually, that might be the exact same as the one my dad gave my sister to sell for him... i'll get the specs from her and see. i was hoping to find a 17" one with slightly better specs, but i just might get my dad's if it has airport.
if not, i might come grab that, cuz ajax is closer than toronto.... hehe
Fuji Jun 14th, 2012, 10:33 AM pm sent. ;)
Chimpur Jun 14th, 2012, 12:42 PM Be aware that if it has the original Airport its only wireless b and also it won't support WPA2.
rodkin Aug 7th, 2012, 08:17 PM I've still got a couple of 20-inchers and a couple of 17-inchers. They were retired to the museum long ago, so I no longer use them. But they sure are nice to look at! One of my all-time favourite designs.
