Hello all,

I will be 5 weeks on vacation this summer, and I will not bring my MBP, only my iPad. I will have access to some friends PCs or macs and eventually cybercafes computers too.

I'd like to access and edit my documents on the iPad and on those computers.
They are mostly some doc files, spreadsheets, but also images and PDFs.
I thought of google docs for the files it handles, and I'd need something else like dropbox for the other ones?

What would you guys recommend?

I use Microsoft SkyDrive because they gave me 7GB. They have apps for iOS and Mac.

If you're looking to edit documents, SkyDrive might be the answer. Do the webapps work on the iPad?

Microsoft OneNote is the iPad app for SkyDrive documents. It works fine. Clean interface. No advertising.

I'd also refer the OP to crawford's wonderful post on editing options for the cloud:

Thanks for the other thred tip, I already found it, unfortunately after having created this one.

One question though : OneNote seems like it's not really for .doc, .xls editing, more for note taking (notes that can be shared on skydrive). I'm actually interested in Office2, that seems very able.

Just to note but it looks like Microsoft may soon release Office for the iPad.

Hmmm. This is interesting. I didn't think there'd be an app that would meet both your requirements: 1) Drop-box compatible 2) Word doc editor.

But according to this PCWorld article (http://www.pcworld.com/article/253620/cloudon_puts_office_on_your_ipad_for_freefor_now.h tml), there is. As the article says, it's unclear how CloudOn (http://site.cloudon.com/) is making money, so I'm a bit skeptical. There privacy policy and terms of service don't raise any major flags... I'll give it a try myself...

Yes, I'm kinda waiting for Office for iPad, but according to various sources it's delayed because tablets running windows 8 are coming this autumn, and also it may be expensive.

CloudOn serms promising, but I've read very bad reviews : it's like they make a remote desktop to a server running windows, you have the windows interface, so it's very not adapted to the iPad, and slow.

I'm inclined to go with either dropbox or skydrive and use Office2 that can edit documents located on either of those cloud services. i'll post a reply when I have had the time to make my tests (hopefully this weekend). Suggestions are still welcome of course!

It is slow. There's a very obvious lag between typing a letter and seeing it onscreen. I could get used to the interface. But not the lag.

QuickOffice was just bought out by Google. It's currently $20. I wonder what sort of model Google will use with it.

I set up a Google Docs document today for a small group in a summer teachers' course to collaborate and share materials. Seems several of them with iPads can get to the document (I allowed public access), but they don't see the 'edit' button on their screen - even though I've given them edit privileges. Do they have to go to the desktop view? I'm wondering. I didn't have to. Thanks.
Oh, what's up with Google Drive? Is that to compete with Dropbox?
/M.

I've had similar problems. Did you upload a Word .doc into Google docs? If so, you'll need to convert it into Google format. To do this, go to the page that lists all your files. Select the Word doc (using the checkbox) then press the "More" button at the top. Select Export to Google Docs.

You'll see two identically named files in the list. The one accompanied with an icon that's a blue rectangle with white horizontal lines can be edited directly in Google Docs. The one with a stylized W icon can't be edited, only downloaded.

Yup: Google Drive is Google's jump into full-on cloud computing and storage. You can store any kind of file there, within certain size restrictions.
