I seem to be dumb and cant find this answer or I'm misreading the information.

I want to buy and unlocked iPhone 4s from Apple. If I do and insert my Bell SIM will it be locked to Bell? Or will i be able to use it with any carrier at any time? And possibly use it in the U.S. when travelling?

I have a Bell iPhone 4S but its locked to the carrier.

iPhones purchased at full price from Apple will remain unlocked.

iPhones purchased from a carrier (regardless of price paid) or iPhones purchased as a subsidized price from Apple will be locked to the carrier.

Phones unlocked by paying a fee to your carrier remain unlocked.

Phones unlocked by some third party method may not remain unlocked.

As of June 1st Telus now unlocks the iPhone for $50 with similar conditions as Rogers and Fido. Maybe Bell will be next.

Bell already unlocks phones but just not the iPhone.

I own my iPhone that I bought out from Virgin,
But it's still locked to Virgin.

When I asked if they could unlock it,
They told me to go to one of those street vendors to get it unlocked.

Yet Virgin Australia offers to unlock paid for iPhones for free.
Virgin Canada customer service sucks.

Virgin Canada and Virgin Austrailia have nothing in common, other than names. Virgin wireless in Canada is just Bell. Virgin wireless in the states is just Sprint.
