: A CPP question for anyone receiving or knows about

This started as a difference of opinion with my landlord. They've been charging me for parking for nearly three years. They say they haven't.

A difference of about $700 total.

My rent is based on income, so I dug out my income tax and started comparing numbers.

If I divide the CPP amount on my 2011 T4A by 12 to get the monthly amount, I get $26 more than I actually got. E.g. I got $500 a month. The T4A says I got $6312/12=$526.

AFAIK there are no deductions from my CPP. So what the heck.

Does Ottawa have some strange accounting practices? Is there a reasonable explanation? Am I being underpaid to the tune of $312 a year.

This is very important because when I add up what I've been shortchanged and what I've overpaid, it's almost the price of a new MacBook Air :D

Thanks, margaret

The only thing I could think of is Indexing. CPP and OAS are indexed with the price of inflation. Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security Benefit Rates 2011 (http://www.disabled-world.com/disability/social-security/canada/2011-payment-rates.php)

But the CPP increase is effective on the 1st of January. So that's not it.

But I noticed OAS is indexed and the increase goes into effect each quarter. Are you including OAS in your calculation?

I think I understand it now. I'm getting the correct amount from CPP, but then my landlord is indexing it twice and basing my rent on an amount that is much higher than the actual indexed amount.

I've talked to them and they will go back a few years to see how much I've been overcharged and I should get a nice refund.
