: Recommend Ottawa Web Host?

Hi
I'm new here, and am not sure if this is the best place to post this question, so please be gentle!

I am looking for someone to host my iWeb website, but I can't figure out the technical stuff.
I've tried renting hosting before, but when it came time to put numbers in fields, I could not get it right, and my site was never hosted.

So I'm wondering if there's a local web hosting company that would do telephone support to get my site up online.

I'm in Ottawa.

Can you recommend a local web hosting company that has ... shall we say, very supportive technicians?::baby:

Thank you!
Jen

I'm locked-in to a plan elsewhere for now, but I've heard good things about Server North (http://servernorth.net/).

Mike, the guy who runs it, is a really good guy and always helpful. Hope this helps.

There's no real need for a web host to be local - you just need to choose one with good support. I've moved my own site and those of many of my clients to Hostgator over the past year. Superb support and I couldn't be happier. They have both telephone and online chat support. Great prices and features too. :) (Google Hostgator coupon - you should be able to find one that gives you 25% off your first invoice, which if you choose the 3 year Hatchling option, gets the per month cost down to $3.71 USD) ServerNorth has a very basic plan for $10 a month - which is certainly no bargain and doesn't even give you PHP or email accounts, apparently. See: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3931016?start=0&tstart=0 for iWeb sites on Hostgator.

All that said though, I'd give some serious thought to redoing your site either in software that is still supported (Dreamweaver, RapidWeaver etc.) OR, what I would recommend - use WordPress, which is absolutely free, and can be used to build static sites as well as blogs. There are lots of lovely free templates out there - and a free WP theme/framework called Suffusion (http://aquoid.com/news/themes/suffusion/) which is quite powerful which you can use to create a fully customized site that doesn't look like a WordPress site. There are other frameworks like Thesis that are paid options (I use it) with superb support available, but you really do have to be willing to start to learn some CSS. Suffusion gives you enough options that you probably could do some pretty neat stuff just through its design panel.

+1 for Wordpress.

There are conversion utilities out there in the Wordpress community (goog -> iweb wordpress convert).

Atahualpa (http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/atahualpa) is another highly customisable free theme with plenty of options.

Thank you all for your responses and helpful advice. I took your advice, Honourable Citizen, (p g) and went with Server North, an Ottawa based webhosting service and much more as it turns out, signed up for a year and also asked them to register my domain name for me. I made my website with iweb and had it in a folder on my desktop which is as far as I got with this whole uploading of websites business. Mike at ServerNorth came to my place and uploaded it for me personally. An honest-to-goodness old fashioned house call! I couldn't be more pleased. My website: jring.ca
