: iPhone bike mount and Calorie burn counter
Chimpur May 28th, 2012, 08:25 PM Is there any way to dock or mount my iPhone 3GS to my bike? By bike i mean bicycle. Also are there any biking apps that would know of trails better than google maps or a GPS app that thinks only in roads for cars?
I don't really run so I'm not sure that a jogging or running app will work that well as its a different amount of calories that would be burnt on a bike ride as opposed to running.
Plus it'd be kinda cool to figure out my speed as I'm biking. And if the app knew what the normal level of the bike was; it would stand to reason that it could use the sensors to figure out any incline that I'm biking on and adjust the amount of calories as the effort would be different. Then again; gearing is an issue with how much effort is put in to get the speed and maintain it, etc...
tilt May 28th, 2012, 09:43 PM There is one app I remember, called GPS Cycle (look for it in the App Store, it is free). The App Store has quite a few apps for biking, including some that have a cadence counter that works with the sensors mounted in your wheels.
I am not sure about adjusting calories based on incline though.
Cheers
Andrew Pratt May 29th, 2012, 08:36 AM I use RunKeeper for my running and I'm pretty sure it has a cycling version...there's versions for just about everything incl skiing so there has to be a bike app!
crawford May 29th, 2012, 09:03 AM Check out Strava (http://www.strava.com). There is a very large community of users and their iPhone app is great. If you ride the same routes, it will track your performance over time and you can compare segments of your ride against others who have done the same parts of the route.
You can buy a handlebar mount (http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/Cycling/Computers/PRD~5026-059/tigra-sport-bikeconsole-for-iphone-4-3.jsp), but I'm not sure whether it displays your speed & distance in real time. I just slip my phone into my back pocket and review the results later (or at least I did before I picked up a dedicated GPS unit). It will calculate an estimate of calories burned using basic information about your age, height, weight and model of bike you're riding.
If you want something more exact, you can purchase a chest strap (http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/WatchesClocks/GPSTrainingWatches/PRD~5020-536/garmin-premium-hrm-chest-strap.jsp) and a sensor that plugs into your dock connector (http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/RunningAndFitness/HeartRateMonitors/PRD~5028-620/garmin-ant-adapter-for-iphone.jsp).
dona83 May 29th, 2012, 11:57 AM I use Cyclemeter for my bike rides, it displays like a traditional cycle meter but it does one better if you don't have it mounted on your handlebar, I set it to just say to me every minute or something how fast I'm going, how far I've travelled, current time, etc. The app works great for running as well.
App Store - Cyclemeter GPS Bike Computer (http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/cyclemeter-gps-bike-computer/id330595774?mt=8)
For mounts, there's this one at the Apple Store. It does not have an audio jack so you will need Bluetooth headsets like the sweatproof Motorola S9. Mixed reviews however.
iBike Phone Booth Bicycle Mount - Apple Store (Canada) (http://store.apple.com/ca/product/H5992VC/B)
I'd rather get this one from MEC. Seems a bit more rugged, and it has an audio port though I prefer the wire free convenience of Bluetooth anyway, plus it's $15 less. You have to be a member however.
Tigra Sport BikeConsole for iPhone 4 & 3 - Mountain Equipment Co-op. Free Shipping Available (http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/Cycling/Computers/WiringSensorsParts/PRD~5026-059/tigra-sport-bikeconsole-for-iphone-4-3.jsp)
Both are weatherproof.
dona83 May 29th, 2012, 12:06 PM Also, Cyclemeter integrates well to DailyMile, which is like a FaceBook for cyclist.

normcorriveau May 29th, 2012, 02:42 PM There is also the Wahoo Bike Mount (http://www.wahoofitness.com/Products/Wahoo-Fitness-Wahoo-Bike-Pack-for-iPhone.asp). It is pricey but gives you additional info like cadence and heart rate and an optional battery extender.
I'm leery of putting my iPhone on my handlebar so I've stuck with my Garmin 800 which is a dedicated device that does everything I need.
Chimpur May 29th, 2012, 03:30 PM Wow! there are a lot of options out there!! I mostly bike around my neighbourhood and on the Humber River paths.....
I can see this going from something thats fairly affordable and then exploding into major money lol!!
I think i'll first have to invest in a better seat and maybe fix that ticking in my gear set lol!
Lawrence May 29th, 2012, 05:15 PM I use a RAM mount on my Vespa GTS 250 for my iPhone,
If it's a iPhone 3GS, Then you can also get a Magellan mount waterproof case.

I like the look of this case and how it looks secure. Also the ANT receiver, cadence and speed sensors is cool. I doubt I'd need the additional battery pack though. Then again if the screen, gps, etc were on solid for an hour or two; i could see that draining the battery fast.
If only my peddling could drive a generator that in turn charged the phone....lol!!!
"Where you going?" "I'm going for a ride; to charge my phone!"
vancouverdave May 31st, 2012, 12:07 AM I like the looks of Strava. So much you can do online. I have a 50 yr old colleague at work who has used it extensively, and his son bikes competitively, so it seems to cover a broad set of demographics. He recently purchased an iPhone to take better advantage of Strava. He also bought a bike mount with he heart rate monitor and all.
DeadZone Jun 1st, 2012, 03:29 PM to add to the plethora of options:
BioLogic has both a bike mount and app. The app is called BikeBrain
