If the battery shows like 40%, is it safe to top it up or will doing so harm the battery?

It a new iPhone 4s.

[QUOTE=John Clay;1196186]Charge it whenever you feel like it.

In Ontario, only charge it 'off peak' when power is cheap(est), ie 7pm - 7am......... :lmao:

Ah, but I live in Saskatchewan. I don't know when "peak" time is here. Everything is pretty flat. beejacon

I plug in my iPhone every night. Sometimes the battery is still at 90%, but it has never hurt any of the batteries. Did this with my 3, 3Gs and now my 4. That way it is ready to go every morning. My battery has never gone below 50% on any given day, ever.

Thanks Sinc. Good to know.

I would say charge it whenever you can, irrespective of the present charge remaining. I seem to remember Steve Gibson explaining this recently.

Li-ION batteries any any device do not like to be deep drained to low levels as it damages the battery and the life. Li-ION batteries prefer to be charged all the time, so my recommendation is to put it on a charge every night after use. Once every 2 months drain it to about 5 percent to get the most out of the battery to ensure you are getting optimum life out of the battery.

P.S. Don't use apps that are sitting in the background using CPU power or data. I would suggest looking for tips on saving battery life on the forum or the internet.

ImToast,

Thanks for the info on the Li-ION batteries. I will now charge all the time.

Good plan. Mine was a gift so should I ask my son if he charged it?

According to Apple's own recommendations (link below) the iPhone(or iPod Touch) battery should be fully charged and drained at least once a month otherwise charging the battery is as you desire.

Apple - Batteries - iPhone (http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html)

Use iPhone Regularly
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

Thanks BigDL. I'll keep that in mind. I tend to drain the iPad every day because I use it constantly, but the phone doesn't get much use. I'm not a phone talker and we mostly text - we are a family of few words :D

That is a bad link that hangs iTunes on my MBP.

Here is a very different view and consistent with my experience:

It's a standard web link that doesn't interact with iTunes in the slightest.

I'd follow Apple's advice:

as suggested above.

Then the link has been changed. It took me to iTunes both times I tried it. It is fine now.
