Seagate Buys Data Storage Company LaCie For $186 Million | Cult of Mac (http://www.cultofmac.com/169057/seagate-buys-data-storage-company-lacie-for-186-million/)

well that is an interesting turn of events..
seems that drive makers are getting directly into retail products..
Hitachi owns G Drive.. Now Seagate owns LaCie

Interesting.. hope nothing changes.. I do like both companies..

Seagate and Western Digital have been selling retail external products for years under their own brand name, as has Samsung (now owned by Seagate).

LaCie if I remember correctly was once owned by disk maker Quantum, which was purchased by Maxtor in 2000, which was in turn purchased by Seagate in 2006.

LaCie was founded in Oregon USA, was acquired by Plus Develoment (a division of Quantum) in 1990, and the brand was then bought by French firm D2 in 1995, and the LaCie name was applied to the D2 product line as well as the acquired LaCie product line.

Anyone own/use Wiebetech drive storage units? Recommended?

Wiebetech make good products, high quality construction, high priced after importing and the disadvantage of having to deal with the USA for warranty.

I have lots people who use them.. it is mostly if you want to make a custom raid unit of JBODs..
there are local resellers who do sell them. Just keep in mind if you have a warranty issue you will have to deal direct with either the drive manufacturer or wiebetech..
otherwise there are lots of pre made configs out there with less warranty hassle.

do have a reason for this specific purchase?

LaCie it ain't so...

Actually, not my favourite brand, some preferred their styling, I wasn't among them.

Great, now Seagate's quality will get even worse.

I've seen them at Vistek, but the price is out of my range but wondered what the experience of Mac users might be..
Thanks

I've found LaCie's newer enclosures significantly better than Seagate's. However LaCie has had far too much of a history of just using the cheapest drives they can in my experience.

Enclosures good, power supplies bad.

i have set them up in the past - whats there to say they work.. nothing special other than if you are looking for specific reasons like doing an odd Raid or JBODs etc..
as I mentioned before they are expensive, there has to be a reason for your interest in them.

otherwise there are tons of cheaper finished solutions.

I used to like them, then I had a problem with one of their power supplies, and one of their drives. I didn't care for them after that.
