: Where to Find New Battery for MacBook Pro 17" Unibody (Early/Mid 2009)
MBD May 15th, 2012, 05:21 PM My MacBook Pro 17" Unibody (Early/Mid 2009) could use a new battery. The battery still works but it doesn't hold the charge it once did (I've had it for 2 years as I bought it as a refurb just as the i3/i5 processors came out). Does anyone know of a good place to order a fresh battery for this model in Canada? I would get it from iFixit but I fear the duties and brokerage fees!
Thanks for your suggestions!
monokitty May 15th, 2012, 05:27 PM Edit: A Mid '09 MBP doesn't have a user-serviceable battery (technically speaking) as far as I know. My original suggestion isn't relevant any longer.
MBD May 15th, 2012, 05:52 PM I am going to swap the battery out myself. It's pretty straightforward. I have had it a part to update the hard drive and the ram and it is very simple to get at the battery. I don't see the option from the Apple Store however probably because they don't consider that work user-serviceable.
G-Mo May 15th, 2012, 06:20 PM You are correct, it's not a user-serviceable part; it also requires a non-standard pentalobe screwdriver.
Chimpur May 15th, 2012, 07:01 PM You could check someplace like OWC and see if they have a Newer Technology battery and the appropriate screwdriver. I know it's still from the States and may have b&d fees.
G-Mo May 15th, 2012, 07:13 PM If Dr Battery makes a replacement, I know Mainly Mac in Markham sells their stuff, at least they regularly stock the MacBook replacements.
MacDoc May 15th, 2012, 07:21 PM Not yet for the NewerTech afaik - in the works I am told. 4th quarter says the man who knows...hang in there.

fyrefly May 15th, 2012, 11:08 PM Why not get the Apple Store to replace it for you? It's $199, but I'm sure it comes with a warranty. How much would the Ifixit be with shipping and brokerage? (I can't find it on their site)

but no sign of the required required battery for the later MC226LL/A 17" MBP that I could see.
Paddy May 16th, 2012, 04:05 PM It's here: Apple MacBook Pro 17 inch (Mid 2009) - BattDepot.com - A1309, 661-5037, A1297, MacBook Pro MC226LL/A, 661-5037, A1309, (http://www.battdepot.ca/model/apple/macbook+pro+17+inch+(mid+2009)/lap206.aspx) The Apple part number is 661-5037/A1309 - same info found in both battery listings.
I've ordered a number of batteries and adapters over the past few years from battdepot.ca and they've all been just fine, and are a whole lot cheaper than the replacements from Apple.
MBD May 16th, 2012, 04:27 PM Wow, that one's the cheapest too! Now, to figure out the proprietary tool. iFixit offers a tool. Now, I need to figure that one out.
