: Bye-bye, Perian
CubaMark May 15th, 2012, 02:57 PM Perian Shutting Down, Going Open Source (http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/perian_shutting_down_going_open_source/)
The team behind Perian is shutting down the project after six years of development and will be releasing the code for its video codec tool to the open source community. Perian has been a popular OS X add-on because it lets users play media content that isn’t natively supported through QuickTime.
“Starting 90 days after the final Perian release, we will no longer provide support,” the team said on their website. “We’ll wrap up our loose ends, pack up our bags, and move on to new and exciting projects.”
The Perian source code will be posted to Google Code or Github, and the team isn’t guaranteeing the final version will be OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) compatible.

John Clay May 15th, 2012, 04:06 PM A real shame. Perian is an absolutely amazing project.
I hope someone picks up the project and keeps it alive in some form or another.
minnes May 15th, 2012, 04:39 PM Darn, this one thing I use quite a bit. Hopefully it will just work in 10.8 anyway, though I hope it gets updated by someone eventually.
Bravo to the creators for their work
dona83 May 15th, 2012, 05:19 PM 10.8 won't work on my iMac. lol. That's a shame though, but it's always a wonder how these things get developed, especially something as complex as Perian. Open source doesn't put food on the table.

Oh really? I make more an an OpenBSD developer than I ever will as a Mac tech. Thinking open source always = free is dead wrong. Open source means open code and it's not always free.
Many open source software users are paying customers and even free software makes money through direct support in many cases.
Also.. ever hear of a Canadian billionaire named Bob Young? He made his first few hundred million from open source software many know as RedHat Linux.
cap10subtext May 17th, 2012, 08:03 AM I'm going to fork that repository so hard.
Chimpur May 17th, 2012, 10:27 AM Oh no!!!!
mgmitchell May 17th, 2012, 08:14 PM I have it on my MacBook ('07) - but I admittedly have NO idea what it does and what I will miss once it goes "open source".

Perian enhances QuickTime on OS X - allowing it to play AVI and other formats (out of the box, QT handles .mov, .m4v and a few others).
It's the thing we install on every relative's new Mac to head off the inevitable "Why can't I see this video of kittens that my cousin sent me?"

Specially those who just converted from windows and have a lot of .avi clips or don't buy movies from itunes

I loved this guy. He didn't suffer fools gladly. Reminded me a great deal of John Lennon, and I think he reminded John Lennon a great deal of himself. Not sure how it relates to Perian, unless it's code for Pierre…
dona83 Jul 27th, 2012, 10:14 AM Fortunately, Perian still works in Mountain Lion.
Kosh Jul 27th, 2012, 01:28 PM Thanks for the confirmation. I have Perian and Flip 4 Mac both installed on my Mac. Although, I guess I won't be upgrading my Mac Pro from 2007 to Mountain Lion.
